Q: How do keep folder icons from rearranging?

Same problem here. :-(  Really hoping this gets fixed soon.

Still experiencing the same problem despite the 10.7.1 update.  I just don't get it.  How could such an obvious issue get past the launch and the first update.  I really don't want to resign to view by list for the nature of organization of my projects.

every time I do a Save As from some application like Mail or Safari, when I re-open my Home folder the icons are all messed up again.

Seems to be fixed for me so far (keeping fingers crossed). There's always the possibility a software conflict may be contributing to this problem too. The process of updating Parallels used to cause similar problems for me a couple cats ago. Just a thought.

as noted elsewhere, this seems to be caused by opening a save as dialog from another app. whatever the cause, this really needs a fix, it's becoming increasingly annoying, 10.6 was fine in keeping folder views as set, lion just seems to have a mind of its own.  the set as defaults is only good if you want all folders to look a particular way when opened. 10.7.1 didn't fix this.

This is happening for me too, in 10.7 and 10.7.1. I don't need to do a 'save as' either. Sometimes I just close a window and when I open it the icons have rearranged. Often the whole window is moved and resized too - very frustrating. Not only that, but whenever I restart, any folders that had image backgrounds lose the images.

It turns out that my success with the 10.7.1 update was short-lived, and as of yesterday, I am back to regretting ever having "upgraded" to Lion.

Happening again here too, but not as frequently under 10.7.1. Apple obviously has to fix this quickly.

Some of the new "features" need rethinking too. I can't recommend Lion to anybody yet.

I think it is a fundamental problem that does not only affect the Finder. Now Mail does not save account behaviour either. So maybe it is a bug related to this new save state feature. However it is a very annoying problem that makes Lion feel like a very buggy OS!

This is a clear bug. I have the same thing with both of my macs, other one with factory installed Lion (MBA) and the other with SL updated to Lion (MacPro). This has to be fixed soon!

I had the same annoying problem for 2 days in 10.7.1 but just solved it by copying a .DS_Store file from another disk using @BinaryNights Forklift.

I use SuperDuper to mirror my disk once a week, so that procedure came to my rescue !

btw it is the .DS_Store file from my root folder

this problem has existed since installing lion 10.7.0, i haven't attempted to trash the .ds_store file in the root folder, has this worked for anyone else?

I had opened a separate thread on this which had no replies.

After trying a few things I have found a workaround which works for me:  save to desktop and the folders stay the way I put them. Then drag the document into where you want it. The next time you open 'save as' it will offer desktop as the first choice, and not rearrange the folders.

For me it seems to be the act of saving rather than the opening of the 'save as' window which rearranges them.

I'm glad it's not just me, but the search in this forum didn't get me to either of these threads so I've been very puzzled.

Just bought and downloaded Desktop Saver for Icon Positions from the app store. It's the only thing I've found that will save the position of my icons (all 60 of them as I have a 30" monitor). Imagine restarting your computer, or restarting your dock or finder, only to find your icons all over the place. It doesn't respect the Finder view options (mine are snap to grid) as I like to keep certain files/folders in certain columns.

Once you "Save Profile (1,2 or 3)", you can quit the app. When the icons rearrange themselves for no other reason than lazy programming, simply launch the app and click "Restore Profile" (using the same number as the saved profile). Stack Items will pile all your icons onto each other in one stack and give you a clean desktop, but you can restore your icons back by using the respective "Restore Profile #". BTW, I have no affiliation with this company and a friend turned me onto this app as he was ready to downgrade to SL as it was driving us both batty.

A possible cause.

I had not had this problem until Lion 10.7.1.

I discovered that in a separate log-in the "all my files" view was set differently. I reset it, logged out of there, and tried saving documents and from Mail - so far so good.

I'll let you all know whether this is a solution in a few weeks.
