Q: deleting reference master files

I have my photos stored on a networked drive and referenced in Aperture

When I try to empty aperture trash I get this message

Some referenced master files cannot be moved to the System Trash, and will remain in their current locations:

• You don’t have access to the System Trash on the master files’ volume.

Other master files will be moved to the System Trash as specified.

How can I delete them from the networked drive?

Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

That's a bit of a tricky one, as Aperture doesn't support networked volumes.  For the ones that Aperture can't touch directly, you'll need to to the networked volume in Finder and delete them.

Strange that you don't have access. Have you tried repairing permissions on the network drive through Disk Utility?

shuttersp33d  Disk Utilities repair permissions only works on the root volume.

There is one extra step.  Go to the root of the drive with the referenced files and select "Get Info".  At the bottom there should be a check in a box called "Ignore ownership of this volume".  This may be good enough, but go ahead and click the gear icon at the bottom to "apply to enclosed items".  Now this should set all the folders on the volume to ignore permissions.  Now Aperture should be able to delete your referenced files from the external drive.

    Hello everybody,

We have noticed the same problem with our Pegasus R6 from Promise Technology. And we have read allready a lot of forums were this problem is been fixed.

However.... the option with the 'get info' - 'Ignore ownership of this volume' isn't working for us! We still can't delete the master files from our Pegasus R6 Raid 5?

Please is there an other way to do it?

Did you apply the permissions to the enclosed folders?  Also, when you empty the trash, did you check the box that appies to referenced files?  Other than that, I don't have any other suggestions.

And above you see an image without the box checked 'Ignore ownership of this volume'. We have tried this with the checkbox on and off, but neither one of those will work?

At the root of each volume (other then the root volume) is a file called .Trash If the permissions are not set right on this file you will experience the symptoms you are seeing.

The problem is because the file name starts with a period it isn't normally viewable in the Finder unless you've enabled show hidden files. Of course turning that on isn't as simple as flicking a preference. So the easiest way to look at the permissions of the file is to use the Terminal application.

Open the Terminal app an do an ls -la on the root of the volume you are having problems with. The name will be /Voumes/nnnnnnnn where nnnnnn is the name of the volume. If you look in the /Volumes folder you will see the name.

So in Terminal the command will be

    ls -la /Volumes/nnnnnnnn

(again nnnnnn is replaced by the actual name)

    Post back the results.

The permissions on the .Trashes folder are wrong. You need to do a

    • sudo chmod 1333 /Volumes/nnnnnn/.Trashes

You might get an error message or warning when you do this, ignore it. Now do the

    • ls -la /Volumes/nnnnn

again. The permissions on the .Trashes file should be

    Screen shot 2011-08-18 at 13.40.37.png

if thgey are go ahead and try deleting in Aperture.

good luck, be careful when doing the sudo commands.

I did exactly what you told us.

    d-wx-wx-wt@   2 levindenboer  staff     68 17 aug 22:20 .Trashes

But when i whant to delete the master images i get the same message again:

    Schermafbeelding 2011-08-18 om 19.46.36.png

Is it not the name of the trashes??? If i look at the line on my imac it say's:

    drwx------    2 levindenboer  staff     68 18 aug 17:32 .Trash

    And the line on my Volume Pegasus R6;

    d-wx-wx-wt@   2 levindenboer  staff     68 17 aug 22:20 .Trashes

It looks like the system has the name .Trash and the external volume is .Trashes

    I don't know if that's a problem?
