There seems to be no difinitive solution to this problem.  This new feature has to be one of the most stupid, most annoying most pointless ideas there's ever been.  And, ironically, the one place where you want a window to open automatically no longer works.  When I plug in my iPhone, iTunes doesn't open automatically even though I have that check box is ticked.

Come on Apple, get rid of this feature, please!

You can go to ~/library/Saved Application State and delete the com.apple.Safari.savedState folder.  This will make sure you can use the feature everywhere EXCEPT Safari.

A bit of a work-around but it does work:

Close any open windows before quitting e.g. Safari then when you re-open Safari it will open with whatever you have set in Safari preferences.

This was driving me crazy on all my apps, safari, excel, word.  Most annoying thing ever.  I may be working in 5 or more different documents at a time.  When I quit and restart I don't want all these windows open again, I want to decide what to open.

Unchecking resume worked great, although it seems to come into effect the 2nd time you reboot the applications.  Thanks.

Maybe Apple will fix this, can't see how it helps anyone.

Quickerer, the whole point here is that some of us don't want to have to manually close all windows before quitting Safari. For Numbers and Pages, re-opening windows is a great idea. Re-opening browser windows is problematic.

    1) Sites with session specific URLs will probably fail to load, and expired sessions may prevent reloading anyhow without authentication

    2) Forms may be resubmitted (although Safari will warn about this)

    3) It's not cool to sit there while Safari frantically tries to reload a dozen web pages that I'm no-longer interested in. Local files typically open quickly, and are persistent works in progress. Web pages are typically slower to load, and more ephemeral then local files.

I'd be very happy to find a way to disable this for specific applications. Gaunibwe, what you suggested works only if the user deletes that folder each time before quitting Safari. That seems cumbersome. ag2web, the script you have there affects all applications or none, so it doesn't address the question at hand. Also, this isn't just about when shutting down the computer - it's about quitting and relaunching Safari, without it restoring windows.

You do have an interesting though; GUI scripting could be used to send a shift key press to prevent safari from restoring its windows. Kind of clunky though for the average user.

To prevent safari from opening old pages

    1. goto /Users/<yourname>/Library/Saved Application State

    2. delete content of this folder

    3. lock the folder (get info > lock)

It looks to me like unticking the 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' check-box (in System Preferences, General) works when closing and re-opening apps in the same session, but doesn't work if the app is closed by the computer while it's shutting down.

So, to stop Safari from re-opening web pages upon start up, untick the check-box mentioned above and make sure to close Safari manually before shutting down the computer.

    Anyone concur?
