Q: No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

To all for whom the fix doesn't work: it is meant for Philips TV's... not Samsun, not Sharp, etc Now, i'm pretty sure if you'd just go to your library, move the Display overrides to some other location, your desktop for example, and after that reboot there is a chance it'll work.... If it doesn't simply put back the folder in it's original location.....

This is extremley frustrating, and I will be phoning apple in attempt for a refund for Lion.

Setup : Dual booted Mac Mini 2010 connected to a TV (46" Samsung) by HDMI cable, no remote access.

    Problems:

    1) The most serious, when I turn the mac mini on I no longer get any picture! I have to take the HDMI cable out and put back in to force the picture.

    2) I can no longer get into the boot option during startup, my tv says the resoultion is not supported. Thus I cannot boot into my windows partition, or to any cds. (Unplug & plug in doesnt work)

    3) WHen I restart my mac mini, I no longer get the sound to say it is powering on nor do I get any picture. The mac mini powers off after pressing the button once as if it is stucking at the boot up. (dont need to hold the power button down as if it was waiting at login screen (Unplug & plug in doesnt work)).

Not to mention the generaly slowness of lion. It is like upgrading to vista all over again.

Are you on 10.7 or 10.7.1? It's slow because all OS upgrades are slow at the first hours of being installed it's called indexing. It gets all your files organized for things like "spotlight". If your not on 10.7.1 update to it, it should fix most of your issues. It did mine but not all HDMI issues, I'm a Dev and they have seeded one of the final builds of 10.7.2, which is mainly for iCloud, but will include bug fixes on the public release. Release is near.

I am so glad I found this thread! I found it quite by accident, searching for something else. But knowing all of this before a Mac Mini upgrade sure saved me a headache.

I just upgraded my MacPro to Lion and I love it! I have four fast cores and 16gb of ram so it is blazingly fast, I have not seen a slow down at all. So I was ready to upgrade our MacMini (early 2010 machine) that is attached to a Sony HDMI TV (we bought a couple of years ago) I just happened on this thread before I did it so I knew there were issues.

I did a Time Machine backup first of course. Then I proceeded with the Lion upgrade using Screen Sharing from my MacPro. It upgraded and I then lost the connection to the Pro. Just to check I turned on the TV and to confirm, there was no signal the TV couldn't connect to the Mini. It was taking a very long time for the Mini to show up on the network again, I did wait as I knew the Pro took a while to start up after the upgrade. But it really seemed like it wasn't going to show up again, I was just about to force shut down the Mini and just connect it to my Cinema screen (a total hassle to disconnect it from the Pro to do that), but then I noticed the lights on the back up drive were flashing so I waited, then I saw the Mini on the network again!  So I started up the Screen Sharing on the Pro and ran software update on the Mini.

It restarted and the TV found it (or the Mini found the TV) and connected, beautiful!!! So the update fixed the issue for me. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have the Pro (and or an external monitor) It would be impossible to get to the update without seeing the screen so I sympathize with the folks with a Mini and TV only. Apple should release a combined update so it isn't a two part process.

But thanks everyone for all of the info, it has saved me a lot of troubleshooting time, I would not have known why the Mini wasn't connecting to the TV!  However Lion is so fantastic it is worth the process to get it working.

HarrgHoyy, do you have any Firewire drives connected

    to your mini?

I have a 2010 with Lion installed and found

that if I have a non-bootable Firewire drive attached and

attempt the "option" boot so I can boot into my Windows

partition, it will hang.  If I do it without that drive attached,

it will "option" boot normally showing a bootable volumes.

Also, if I attach my Firewire clone drive it will also

"option" boot normally an shows the clone volume as

    a boot choice.

It appears something is amiss in Lion with GUID partitoned

drives that are not boot volumes when one wants to "option" boot.

I was writing the earlier post in the early hours of the morning, so I feel I may have been a little harsh about the situation, it wasn't fair to compare this to vista. It was still slow even after the indexing had finsihed so after reading a bit more on google at other people experiencing lion being slow, it turns out it was to do with parallels. Looking at the processes, the dock was taking >90% of the cpu.  With parallels there is an option to have the windows applications folder appear in the mac doc menu. Disabling this option showed a dramtic increase in speed. Resolved for me. But still having problems with the HDMI port on start up.

Sorry woodmesiter no FireWire drives attached. I'm thinking it might be the mac mini not setting a high enough resolution during start up for the tv to receive?

I have a Mac mini connected to a Samsung Syncmaster 2443BWX with a Display port to DVI connector and a Philips 32 LCD connected with the HDMI port.  The HDMI stopped working after the LION update(it hangs the computer or the TV).  I was about to go back to Snow Leopard since this feature is very importante to me.  Please keep me posted with any update.

    Thanks.

I just bought a ViewSonic VX2453mh-LED Monitor. It doesn't detect signal when I connect my Macbook Pro via HDMI cable. I don't know if apple doesn't support the display or if it's OS X Lion. Either way it's frustrating but I know this is the price of early adoption. I hope like everyone else here that 10.7.2 will fix the issue.

i reverted back to SL with time machine and although it works, something is definitely up.

i now have to use underscan, before it was set to off.

the resolution appears lower, too, even when set on 1080P (HDMI to LG 1080P).

switchresx didn't work. i was already past the trial when i tried, though. shouldn't have to use it in the first place.

fyi, when reverting back to any time machine backups, the lion recovery partition remains. handy with my non-optical drive mid 2010 server.

Well, it has been a couple weeks now and it looks

like the fix Venturas had used and the 10.7.1 update

has taken care of all my Lion issues on my Mini.

I can turn gear on in any sequence without issue.

It appears that 10.7.1 has fixed issues I had with

extreme studder with iTunes HD content.  Also,

audio is fixed now so that I get sound regardless

    what has been played.

    My setup is:

    MacMini->HDMI->Yamaha Receiver->HDMI->Samsung TV

So, at the moment life is good.  As soon as Microsoft

fixes their Silverlight plugin and Adobe creates an updated

release version of the Flash plugin, then life will be great.

(Playing Netflix content(Silverlight) or Hulu or Xfinity

content(Flash) has a video "burp" after 15-20 minutes

    of a movie).

I am not sure if I have the new OS Lion problem, but I reecently bought a MAC Mini and the HDMI simply could not communcate with the Philips 37" TV. After the initial Grey Apple Logo and the driving wheel, everything has gone black and that was as far as the $6900HKD has took me. Call up Apple and took it to the Apple Centre, no one seems to even have slightest clue what is going on and unable to help out. I am a recent convert from PC and had never been so frustrated and upset about computer before. For PC at least there are more people using it(seems to be that way) and you can get help easier, for Apple, if the Apple Care is rubbish (like my case) you are doomed. FYI, the Apple Care assistant didnt even seem to know what HDMI ot MAC Mini is, she was just trying gave me some template answer and at some point blame it was my TV. The retailer also refused to refund and only help i received was a DVI adaptor and gave me some wishful thinking that it should sort the problem out.

Is there someone out there who has bought a new Mini and suffer same problem as me? Is there light at the end of this tunnel? Am I on my own to sort this out and possibly ending up buying a very expansive aluminium domestic sculpture? Please Apple, this is within the domain of your website, if you see this please contact me and fix this. Being your customer first time has been big torture for me and this is the second weekends I have dedicated my time working for Apple to browsing for solution online.

I had the same issue with my new mini mac and philips tv. Called apple care and theyasked me to contact philips, I contacted philips and they advised me to contact apple again so I called apple care again and explained my issue again and after that apple care had a deeper look into the issue. They asked me to perform the commands shown below from terminal. I could do this over vnc.

    cd /System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-410c/

    sudo mv DisplayProductID-0  DisplayProductID-0.old

For philips tv using hdmi these commands are working as reported in several cases within this thread.

    Kind regards

    Frank
