I've been trying to find a solution to this for a while. iTunes will tell me I have a certain app for updating. I'll update it and after updating it still says that app needs to be updated. I've tried to delete the problematic app and re-download the app but it still shows it needs to be updated. The only solution I've found is to update the app on my iPhone and let it sync with iTunes to update it on my mac.

Does anyone have the same issue and have a better solution?

For me iTunes has always had a problem counting. App update counts often don’t match the actual number of app updates available. This seems to have gotten worse with 10.4.1 or something in the iTunes store backend. I am experiencing the same bug. I repeatedly download the same app (leading to multiple copies in my trash ) but iTunes still says I need the update and the app does not update. No matter how many times I download an app it won’t update.

I have two app that I don’t want to update. So the third app in iTunes update screen typically will be the stubborn one until I update some newer apps. Then whatever the last app I tried to update will become stubborn and not update.

Updating on the iPhone work as expected.

Pretty sure I just figured out what’s going on here.

iTunes is actually still downloading the OLD version of the app even though it is telling you there’s a new version.

I think the database that keeps track of the latest app versions is getting updated before the updated app actually goes live to be downloaded and installed in iTunes. You end up re-downloading the OLD version over and over again until the new version comes through on iTunes servers, usually hours later.

That’s what’s happening for me anyway. No solution, just wait for Apple to sort it out.

I have the same issue. However, my workaround is to update from the iPhone then sync. That clears the pending app. As I recal iTunes had this issue before, then it was fixed. Not it is back again.

I believe Looter is correct. Right now iTunes is telling me that there is an update to Back to the Future Episode One. The version iTunes downloads, however, is the old version. Here is a screen shot with proof...

I found the problem!!! I, too, have been having this problem for 2+ years, and it's infuriating. Short version, and this proved to be true for ALL of the apps that wouldn't "go away". Somehow, there were multiple copies of these apps in my app list- sometimes with slightly altered names- ex. Microsoft tag was also listed as "tag by Microsoft". I deleted all versions I found of the offending apps, then re downloaded them from itunes, no more problem!!!

I have this problem just in the past month or so. Before then, I never had a problem. So, it either started with me adding my iPad into the mix or with a new version of iTunes. Since it started, iTunes always says I have updates (varying numbers). But, when I click on updates, it always says that everthing is up to date. I end up doing the updates on my iPad and iPhone (twice) since iTunes has not been able to successfully do an update since this problem started. It also does not seem like it is just an app that is failing to update since the number changes but iTunes never says I have any updates when I click on "updates". I have no idea how to get it to work properly.

    Hi guys,

I had the same problem that I'v solved doing two things:

    - update all applications on the iPhone

    - go to iTunes and press File -> Transfer purchases from iPhone

    That's it

I removed this problem by deleting itunes cache folder.

    Just delete ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iTunes

    Update any app

    Tada~ Update mark's gone.

This works, but how to find the ones that need updating? I may have hundreds.

Did you change your country on iTunes? If you did, iTunes will detect updates for all the apps you have but will only update the ones that you have purchased in the new country that you have changed to. To be able to update all the apps, you will have to switch back to the previous country (which means using your previous credit card) and switch back to your current country again. It's how I do it, and it is troublesome but it's the only method I found working.

I had the same problem. After switching to a new country in AppStore, apps updates counter was never reset. And I was only able to receive updates from iOS devices. But even updating apps on iOS device and syncing them to iTunes wasn't helping.

What helped was redownloading updated apps from the new country's AppStore using iTunes. It's free for paid apps that were purchased before in old country's AppStore. And as a result my updates counter is always current now.

Although this won't help in case an updated app is not available in new country's AppStore.

Also just log everyone out of itunes and look at the apps that are there, some of them maybe from someone elses login. Just delete them and it will go away
