Q: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

Just did the updates for i-tunes (10.2.1), ATV2 (4.2), and Ipad (4.3). And what I'm getting is when I stream from the computer using the ipad remote app, music starts then just stops. I go to ATV settings and turn airplay off then back on, then the music start again. Then goes out again. But if I just use the ATV, music, photos, YouTube, movies, etc.. everything works fine. It just when I stream. ATV show strong WI-FI signal. Never had any issues until I did the updates. Tried rebooting ATV, did a restart on the computer. NO GO. I'm thinking it's a home sharing issue but I don't really know. Has anyone else having any problems since the new updates? Or any ideas on what I should try. Any help would be great...
Thanks

I agree with SuperSizeIt - Especially since everything "Just Worked" until recently. Not sure if it started with the last TV update or iTunes, but it is clearly a software update, and hoping iTunes 10.5/iOS 5 when they go public solves this issue.

I agree entirely. From all the discussions above, I would surmise that there is a networking problem (both wired and wifi) with Apple TV2. Whether its to do do with poor signals, lease time expiry etc, this is Apple's problem and they should fix it. I have a complete Apple setup with all the latest versions of software (except for OSX Lion - which is another story) and my Home Sharing drops out now and then. Its random. It can sometimes work for hours without a problem. It appears that the latest software update has not solved these problems.

Has anyone lodged a bug report with Apple? I think its possible to do so here - https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn. The more people doing so, the higher the priority Apple will assign to fixing the problem.

Well, it's been 8 days now and everything is working fine again.

I'd never had any issues before, and then we had a power outage 2 weeks ago - and everything just went haywire from then on.

Many people have done crazy things like increasing lease time, static IPs etc... and it sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. One thing I noticed is that we forget about other processes going on in our computer. For example, I have VNC turned on, and host a website on my computer as well as run a WebDAV server. Those are complicated issues that most users don't have.

Don't know what exactly did it, but, it works. So I can forget about this thread, and hope all of you find your solution. Someone around here gave the right answer, there's one good answer for one particular solution, and no one solution for all it seems.

How do you change the dhcp time on the server? What is it?  Thanks!

I am getting tired of watching part of a movie and having Apple TV kick me off to the home menu screen. It tells me to reconfigure my wifi, which means that after choosing my network from the list, I have to re-enter the 64 character password again. This has happened six times already. I can't even cut & paste the password, I have to enter it on that 'updated' page scrolling up & down & across... Why can't the Apple TV2 store my password? My iPod touch can. I never had this problem before that last update. Yes, I'm peeved. Now I can go back to correctly entering that 64 character password so I can see the rest of my movie.  >:/

So I have no idea about any of this technology and most of the terminology used don't mean anything to me. I have been following this thread as I have had the same issue. I have not changed anything, aside from the obligatory AT2 update and for the last 10 days or so I have had no drop out, at all…

It used to drop out every day a couple of times and one particular day every few minutes. So what gives?

Occasionally when I open up my MBP it can't see my library but then I reset it and then it is perfectly fine…

just to confirm - people are having this probielm with latest ATV2 update, Lion and normal itunes, or the latest beta. I have the beta and it craps out all the time. If there's not an update to fix it soon (i.e. I will wait for next proper itunes release) then I will have to take it back despite it being rather old now

I have had this problem for the last 4 months, before the latest AT@ update, I have MAC OS X 10.6.8. but as per previous post problems seem resolved even though I have no idea how…

Seeing that this discussion goes back to March 2011, it's a little disappotnting that Apple has not remedied this yet.

Since the latest software update, my ATV1 is now experiencing the exact same problems as those described for the ATV2.  As well, when it does work (using the various remedies described elsewhere in this thread of unplugging, restarting etc etc), the ATV1 box wants to act more like at ATV2 box and provide streaming only and not storage of the content.

@DB2k -- my issues didn't start until the latest ATV update. I had it using the iTunes 10.5 beta and when rolled back to 10.4. So my guess is the ATV introduced something. Having said that, I am going on a week now with no issues*

    - sign out of Home Sharing (everywhere)

    - increased DHCP lease to 1 day, ATV sleep to 1 hr.

    - power cycled all devices

    - signed back in to HS.

I've just told my router to always give the same IP address to my ATV. Will see if that helps.

Funny thing was tho, its definitely losing its internet connection. I am not convinced it is Home Sharing thats the problem as after I had the problem tonight I very quickly tried some internet content not hosted in iTunes and that was all dead too. So maybe it is a problem with my wireless?

I think my wirless is a bit "special" as I have a wireless router from my ISP which is the modem, with an ether net connection to my time capsule which provides the wireless network. I've always htought it was a bit rubbish so I'm debating on getting a new ADSL Modem/Router to replace both, and use my NAS for Time Machine backups if it isn't all resolved soon.

    This really *****....

I'm ashamed to tell people that I own an Apple TV2...

I can't believe that they haven't fixed this problem yet...

I called them up and after 1 hour, the technician gave up on me...

    What can I do...?

I've just about tried everything previously posted and NOTHING happens...

I still can't find my iTunes Library...

Apple: Why the **** are you doing this...????

I tried turning off the apple sharing and it kept dropping. I have three aplle tvs Before doing updates they worked perfect. I think what has happened is that ihave one of my apple tvs that does not have the update. Because i unplugged the two aptvs that i was not watching and it has been working fine on the one i have done the update on. Keep you posted. Dont forget steve jobs said "it just works!" we just got to figure it out :-)

I have been trying to connect my itunes but keep getting the message "make sure your compture has iTunes open, and that it's on the same network as Apple TV".

My computer and ATV are on the same netwrok and iTunes is on. I have turned home share on and off and I have restarted the ATV and the pc.

    Any ideas?

used to hard cable apple tv to router and laptop to router, that way appletv2 was bulletproof. was the only workaround that worked for me.

any other combination ended in dropped connection.... sooner or later.

well. just changed to a data package only (with optional internet phone) with orcon and they sent me out an orcon router (used to have dick smith wireless one).

since having this new router which is obviously fully compatible with the provider, ie data and router both from Orcon, i have now been connected WIRELESSLY successfully 100% no dropouts for the last 3 days straight! the apple tv2 is still connected via cable to the new router. havent tried disconnecting it from router yet, but the cables are out of view so no need.

my wife's laptop also 100% connected. both laptops listed as computers to access via apple tv.

    i'm stoked.

no, i dont work for orcon.

    gear:

    2 old macbooks. 1 black, 1 white.

1 x atv2 (cabled to orcon genius router)

latest versions of itunes & atv2 software
