Q: Internet connection lost after sleep - Ethernet

I have just started using a new router (a Linksys). My problem is that after the iMac comes out of sleep I cannot get an internet connection using ethernet. It is not the router, a PC connected at the same time does not lose its connection and the internet light on the router stays lit.

When I lose the connection I cannot access the router's web page @ 192.168.1.1. The admin login box appears but with a name that relates to a previous router I used. I assume that this is part of the problem.

Any ideas?

    I'm afraid that I am one of the sinners that barged into the wrong thread somehhow.

     

    My connection is wireless, and I still do sometimes find the computer wakes up with apparently no (wireless) internet connection.

     

    But in my case (and others have reported the same), even though I can't get mail or use Safari when I am told that I have no connection, I can listen to internet radio with iTunes. That's an easy way to establish that it's not really a connectivity issue.

     

    And, though I've not mentioned this, the problem is easy to fix each time. The message that tells me that i'm not connected to the internet invits me to open the little connection repair program. Part of the way through the process of "reconnecting" I am always told that my connection has reconfigured itself, and off I go.

     

    So there's no need (at least in my sort of case) to reboot, as some people do. And since I have the computer go to sleep no more than once a day, the problem is no more than a minor annoyance. But I agree that there is absoliutely no need for even minor annoyance, and it's been going on for so long that one would think it should have been fixed by now.

    I have not heard of that "little connection repair program"....   Has anyone else on this thread had this repair prompt?

    The screen that tells me that I am not connected to the internet has a button labeled "network diagnostics".

    If I click this button, I get a series of screens designed to help me re-establish connection. (That's the little connection repair program that I referred to.) As I work through the screens, something happens and I am told that the connection has been reconfigured and that I am connected, as indeed I am.

     

    I don't have to go through the whole process. It's just that somewhere along the line, the connection is restored-- though of course it never really lapsed, since I can at any point open iTunes and get to internet radio stations.

     

    IApple products are not supposed to act this way.

    Same problems as everyone else. Some days it all works, other days it is utter frustration. I see no obvious correlation with upgrades, hardware, or software.

     

    I use a wireless connection with an AirPort Extreme. This is not a solution but the best work-around I have found, short of unplugging the router and/or rebooting which both take longer. When the connection doesn't work, go to System Preferences and select a different network, then it works just fine -- at least, so far .... I have two home network accounts set up so I can flip between them as necessary.

     

    And I totally agree that this is incredibly frustrating and somebody, somewhere (Apple, are you listening?) should resolve it.

    In april I visited this site because my new iMac lost connection to the internet after sleep. The guy from the helpdesk gave me some advise. I'll repeat it here because it did work for me:

     

    1. empty caches

    2. hard reset: cut off power

    3. reset pram (?): enter following buttons: alt+cmd+R+P

         (= resetting communication between hardware and software (?), you here start-up sound three times)

    4. uninstall non-apple software: I uninstalled a few things: Flip4Mac, MacFuse, Growl, StartUpSoundPrefpane and OpenOffice. I kept Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Sophos antivirus, Adobe Photoshop, Bootchamp and Citrix

     

    After all I don't know what did the trick but I've been without problems ever since. I'm using 10.6.8. iMac 27", sitecom modem router.

    I unpluged the Ethernet cable from the Imac and pluged it back, I did that a couple of times had no problems for the past 3 days, my Imac connects to internet right after waking it up, seems to simple but it seems to be working

    Hi all,

     

    I had exactly the same connection problems as most of the people posting on these 13 pages: when my wife's 2006 MBP woke from sleep, there was no way to reconnect to the wireless network except by restarting.

     

    The problem came exactly when I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard; before the upgrade I had never had any issues with connection loss, right after the upgrade the problems arose.

     

    After reading the 13 pages of this topic, I tried a couple of fixes that seemed pertinent to me, along with a couple of homemade changes, and the miracle happened: no more connection issues for the last five days.

     

    Basically, I just gave a fixed IP to the Mac and added google's DNS adresses in there as well. I made sure my home wireless signal was the only one in my favorite's section, made sure that time machine was disabled and that "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" as well as "Wake for network access" where unchecked.

     

    For me that did the trick, hope it helps some of you as well, and good luck!

    I'm so glad for ya. I've unplugged and replugged my ethernet cable so many times, I can't count them. I still lose internet connection on wake at times. I will say, it seems to be losing connection less often than it did pre-Lion.

    Same thing happening here, but it just started happening about a week ago. Macbook Pro from 2006, running 10.6.8. It is having an issue sleeping anyway, but when I shut the lid, and try to open it later, it won't connect to the internet: ethernet or airport. So far, the only thing that works is a reboot.

    Couchcowboy, mind you it does not always work, I still loose connection on wake up, or start up and have to upunplugged and replugged, but it's the best way I found so far to get my intertnet connection back faster, it is still frustrates me when it happens, this should not be happening but Apple ignores the problem or they don't have the solution. I am still with with Snow Leopard, it is going well, I have never been to eager to upgrade, as long as everything goes well I am satisfied.

    Alright, I've read through the past four pages or so after finding this post and am surprised at how many people are having this problem. Here is what I know. We currently own multiple mac machines all running the same OS as well as some running Lion. We have had many previous machines that were apple/mac as well. Out of the say, one hundred, machines I have touched and personally configured we have ONE that is having this problem which is a macbook pro. I have not seen the specifics of what I am noticing but there are some similarities. This device is connected hardline via the NIC for an ethernet connection, airport is disabled. When this device goes to sleep, the user comes back and wakes the computer, and the computer does not have INTERNET connection only. The ethernet is still "green" in sys prefs and does have a connection. The "Shared" network places in the finder disappear as if they are unaccessible, however, these devices CAN be accessed via command + K by entering their IP addresses, they are still there. I can also communicate and log in to the router on the network via this computer when it is unable to access the internet.

     

    I am unsure what this exactly means, but it basically loses internet access, and the simple networking apple has developed into the GUI Finder. My first hunch was this was some sort of DNS resolution/server issue but it is simply not the case, all machines use the same server and do not show the same behaviour. I have performed many of the same tasks in this thread prior to coming here to only have the problem continue on and on. THE ONE solution that I have not tried that seems like it probably will work is to not allow the computer to sleep ever, makes sense as that is what is causing the problem. I have a hunch that this is a hardware/firmware issue that apple must be fully aware of as it is limited to some systems and not others that are the exact same "builds" and exact same OS versions. I am leaning toward the "give me a new one that works" option as a fix as well. This problem came about within the past 1.5 - 2 months of me writing this. This is what I know about the problem.

    I'm sure Apple is debugging this, we just don't have visibility to their process.

     

    I have a brand new iMac which came with Lion and is now running 10.7.1.  Sometimes when I let the machine go to sleep (i.e. just walk away from it), when I return it doesn't have its network connection.  The "light" in the network preferences panel has gone red, and the only way I've been able to fix it is by unplugging and replugging the iMac's ethernet cable.  No other devices on the home network are affected, and the router is working fine.  Have tried plugging the iMac into both the router directly and a switch I have -- same result.  Even more interesting, I have tried activating the iMac's Wi-Fi connection as well so that it has a fallback network connect... but that fails at the same time too!!  So it appears to be purely a software problem.

     

    I do have "wake for network access" turned on, but I need it on.  I also have a TimeMachine NAS.

    I have tried numerous remedies to this problem (some very extreme) and the only thing that has consistently worked for me, THOUGH SHORT LIVED, is resetting the PRAM.  This remedy lasts for anywhere from 2-3 weeks for me and then the problem starts again.
