Sounds like Directory damage or bad files...

Thank you very much,
I just had to exclude the files named in system.log "Aug 30 13:28:56 noname com.apple.backupd: Error: (-41) SrcErr:NO ......" and the backup finished successfully.

I started getting this error; Time Machine was choking on the same file every time. Disk Utility reported no problems.
I also noticed, perhaps not coincidentally, that Spotlight was acting up. I reset Spotlight by adding my boot drive to its privacy list and then removing it again. After Spotlight finished its reindexing job, both it and Time Machine were working again.
Hope this helps anyone with the same Error 11 problem.

Solved my problem as well. Two different diagnostics showed no problems with either my backup drive or my startup disk. I had one janky preference file that was borking the whole process. Thanks for pointing out the sys log - i use it all the time, but didn't think to check for a useful error message there. You would think Apple would put the file erroring out in the message...
