Try this first:
After switching to Pages, I find that I enjoy text-editing a lot more and my documents look A LOT better and are more fun to make. Pages is very user-friendly once you get to know it.
They work differently, I don't think that is a very good way to learn a program.
May I suggest you start by simply broswing through all the menus and the Inspectors to get a feel for where to find things, then tackle each feature as you need it to hammer home the techniques.
