Sep 5, 2011 8:51 AM in response to CJExplorerby DNC70,Carlos, Ben - glad Carlos's fix sorted it for you both but it doesn't change things for me ;( Tried it twice, no joy - even if I switch my mac off and switch it back on again after deleting the 2 preferences files mentioned.
I'm on 10.7.1 with .ARW files created by a Sony A100. Really miss the thumbnail icons (even though I am far from a professional photographer!).
Any other ideas from anyone or do we need a patch from Apple?
Cheers,
David.

Sep 5, 2011 8:58 AM in response to DNC70by CarlosB,David,
I don't know if you already installed Apple RAWCameraUpdate3.
If not try deleting the files after installing it.
Another sugestion, is fixing yout permissions/disk with disk util or Onyx (I usually run automation cleaning all temporary/cach files).
But backup backup backup first.
Carlos.

Sep 5, 2011 9:41 AM in response to CarlosBby DNC70,Onyx fixed it, many thanks!
EDIT > When I said fixed... I meant nearly fixed
Like your follow up post I think there are still problems with this - I am watching my preview icons swap back to the Apple default one-by-one in front of my eyes then it suddenly stops and some have thumbnails some don't. Quite strange. Resize the icon size and watch as some of the defaults get changed to thumbnails, some don't. Seems hit and miss for me still.

Sep 5, 2011 4:08 PM in response to DNC70by Ben Welland,Ok. So. CarlosB's fix only seems to work sometimes. But. After a bit more testing. I.E. Repairing disk permissions with Onyx (as suggested) and testing exactly which order of deleting finder preference files was actually working for me, I've determined that these are the exact steps which seem to allow OSX 10.7.1 Lion to generate image preview icons in the Finder for SONY's dSLR camera's .ARW raw files. (Note that repairing permissions with Onyx didn't seem to make a difference)
Step 1. click on the "Go" menu in the Finder.
Step 2. hold down the "alt/option" key on your keyboard.
Step 3. click on "Library".
Step 4. Navigate to the "Preferences" folder.
Step 5. Drag the two files "com.apple.finder.plist" and "com.apple.finder.plist.lockfile" to the Desktop. *Note that you can't always simply drag these files to the Trash, as they are usually "in use".
Step 6. Go to the Apple Menu "" and click "Log Out" (not Restart) (Restarting doesn't work)
Step 7. Log back in.
Step 8. Change a Finder preference! This seems to be the trick. Perhaps it forces the Finder to write data to that preference file. An easy Finder preference to change is as follows: Go to the Desktop and click the "View" menu and then click on "Show View Options". Now change the icon size of icons on the desktop.
Step 9. Now navigate to a folder that contains .ARW files. The Finder should now be able to show icon previews of your .ARW files!
Step 10. Enjoy, but know that this functionality will be lost the next time you Restart!
Is it a bug in Lion? Yes.
Does installing Apple's Camera Raw 3.8 (found here) fix the problem? No.
Do we have to wait until Apple fixes the bug for us? No. (we just have to follow the above steps anytime we have critical .ARW files that we need to see the preview icons for!)
Fun stuff.

Sep 6, 2011 12:30 AM in response to Ben Wellandby DNC70,Thanks Ben, glad that worked for you and appreciate you spelling it out step by step like that. I've followed it through twice and still getting the same erratic behaviour on mine though so I'm going to give up. After filing a bug report, of course! http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Cheers,
David.

Sep 6, 2011 8:27 AM in response to DNC70by Ben Welland,Indeed. I filed a bug report the day I discovered the bug! And I urge everyone who's reading this thread to do the same. Because obviously. We haven't exactly come across much of a permanent solution! (although I'm really glad that CarlosB discovered that those 2 Finder preference files play a role in the bug)
Herte's hoping Apple fixes this for us with the release of 10.7.2
And once again.
If you're reading this post, and you shoot with SONY cameras.
Please:
File a bug report here as David has pointed out.
Thanks!
Ben.

Sep 7, 2011 12:44 PM in response to CJExplorerby ruzi25,http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4757 I've just downloaded a Software update that seems to have fixed the issue of Sony RAW thumbnails not showing up. I might be about a week late, since the post says it was updated on August 31, but glad to report this issue should be fixed. If it doesn't work for you, try downloading a free trial of Aperature, the Update might have been specific to that program.

Oct 8, 2011 10:50 AM in response to ruzi25by bwdaly,Neither the finder preference fix nor the Camera RAW update do anything to correct my problem.
I phoned Apple support about a month ago and spent about an hour on the phone with a very nice support rep who seemed to take the problem seriously. He said he would kick it up the chain to the software people.

Nov 7, 2011 10:26 PM in response to CJExplorerby Flitter2009,Hi,
I've had this problem on and off recently - i found that what was happening was that my image files were being corrupted during the copy/paste in finder. I changed to using rsync to copy the files and all of them now view in the thumbnails.
May not be your issue but I suggest you run an md5 checksum if you're moving files around.

Dec 2, 2011 12:12 AM in response to DNC70by Winono,I've just filed the bug report, thanks.
I remember I had this problem with Lion, then it disappeared after I did something (something related to a rebuild or whatever, I cannot remember); but yesterday I had to reset the SMC and the PRAM, and after that the ARW files issue came back
Too bad I can't remember what I did to fix it a few months ago...
