Aug 26, 2011 9:24 AM in response to HalloweenHJBby Francine Schwieder,★HelpfulI don't think you are doing anything wrong, I've been seeing this behavior as well. It seems to me that Lion is much less reliable in keeping folder settings than any previous OS X version. The one that boggles my mind is when I open a folder that had been set to icon view, has ALWAYS been set to icon view, and it opens in list view, and when I check the View settings the box to "always open in LIST view" is checked! I have not yet found any reason for the undesirable behavior, let alone any way to stop it.

Aug 26, 2011 9:26 AM in response to Francine Schwiederby HalloweenHJB,Thanks for sharing your experience. I was wondering if I was losing my mind, or if Lion was playing mind games with me. It seems the latter is more likely...

Sep 6, 2011 8:11 AM in response to Mike on Mauiby HalloweenHJB,I am so sick of spending EXTRA time to keep redoing, redoing, redoing, redoing all my settings! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
I have been a loyal and devoted apple user since 1986, and I am really disappointed and disgusted that the company has lost sight of the fact that we are the customers and consumers, and we pay them for a product that we have every right to expect will function correctly. I do not support the idea that we should do the work for them (to pinpoint problems with their product) --and pay them on top of it. THIS BURNS ME UP!!!

Sep 6, 2011 8:19 AM in response to HalloweenHJBby Mike on Maui,It appears something in the Lion upgrade damages the file that controls desktop folders. The easy fix is to run OnyX and execute the Cleaning processes. Once I did that the folders stayed in place.

Sep 6, 2011 8:23 AM in response to Mike on Mauiby HalloweenHJB,I am not an IT specialist or computer programmer. I do not know what "OnyX" is and even if I did, I would still like to know why I am forced to spend so much extra time to do what the system should do on its own. You see what I mean? Why are the customers forced to become repair people for something they've paid for and have a reasonable expectation to function correctly? Arrrrrgh.

Sep 6, 2011 8:41 AM in response to HalloweenHJBby Mike on Maui,Nor am I but I need to be self sufficent as I live in an area that has few people with any technical knowledge.
OnyX can be found at http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx . It is a tool that that every user should have on hand.
Customers can either shell out big bucks for cradle to grave support or learn about what's under the covers and perform some level of maintenance to both save money and time. Apple products are much easier to deal with than others but it is still complex technology.
Did you throw the spare tire away in your car when you bought it and rely on either AAA or the kindness of strangers if you get a flat?
-
Sep 6, 2011 8:48 AM in response to Mike on Mauiby HalloweenHJB,I am sorry that you misunderstood my frustration as helplessness. Your final comment about spare tires is rather insulting, and I don't quite comprehend the snideness of it. No, I don't think that we can or should be entirely reliant on support from others with our personal computers, but I do think that a system should work reasonably well when it is released to the public as a product to be purchased from a company. In light of the other upgrades and updates, this particular system seems to be entirely too buggy, and that is the source of my frustration: I paid for something that does not work properly, and people seem to think that the consumer should fix the product for the company making money off of it. You see my point?
But at any rate, I do thank you for the link for the application you mentioned. I will attempt to fix my own "flat tire," even though when I bought it it wasn't flat, but was flat the minute I got home...

Sep 7, 2011 10:22 AM in response to HalloweenHJBby HalloweenHJB,FYI to Mike on Maui: I did as you recommended: I installed OnyX and executed the cleaning processes. NO CHANGE in how my folders open. They STILL open randomly --sometimes in icon view, sometimes in list view, sometimes the box is still checked from the last time I checked it, sometimes unchecked. Seems to make no difference. Any other ideas?

Sep 10, 2011 8:49 PM in response to HalloweenHJBby Mike on Maui,UPDATE: Although OnyX fixes the desktop folder problem it doesn't stay fixed. After about a week the folders reverted to the default of opening in the center of the screen. Ran OnyX again and problem disappeared.
Will 10.7.2 have a fix? Time will tell.

Aug 3, 2012 3:12 PM in response to Mike on Mauiby Brian_P,I'm running Version 10.7.4 and am still having the problem. It's especially frustrating to see that, despite the fact that the problem was reported here nearly a year ago, it still persists (three versions later).

Feb 22, 2013 10:04 PM in response to Brian_Pby BartleDoo,Bug is still present in 10.7.5 Apple will not fix this. We will all have to upgrade to 10.8. Apple now cares little about OS X. They are all about iOS unfortunately.
