Q: How do I use the Install disc as a startup disc so I can run Disk First Aid?

How do I restart my iMac using the original install disc so I can run Disk First Aid?  It says I must restart using the install disc and I don't know how.

Thanks,

To start up the computer with the installation disc.

    1. Turn on the computer and insert the Mac OS X installation disc into the DVD drive.
    2. If you’re using a built-in DVD drive, restart the computer while holding down the C key.You can release the C key when you see the Apple logo. Alternatively, you can restart the computer by holding down the Option key, selecting the icon representing the installation disc, and then clicking the right arrow. You must use this method if you are starting up from an external DVD drive.

    Regards.

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc

    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.

    2. Restart the computer.

    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.

    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.

    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions

After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

There is no Disk First Aid in OS X, just Disk Utility. DFA is from the old Mac OS.

Thanks to all!  I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but I'm still learning.

Now I would like to know how to connect my wife's MacBook Pro, running OS X10.6, to my iMac, running 10.4.11.  We are on Time Warner cable and both are wireless.

I know there's a way to configure it in the System Prefs, but don't know how.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Is the purpose to simply transfer files from one machine to the other? Please tell us what you wish to do with connecting the two computers.

No apologies needed, if you knew you wouldn't need to ask & there'd be no need for us!

On 10.4, (10.5 is similar, just a step or two more), open System Preferences>Sharing, enable Personal File Sharing, Personal Web Sharing, & Remote Login, wait a few seconds the try Finder>Go menu>Connect to Server>Browse.

What do I do on her computer which is using OS X 10.6?  I thought I had to do something to both.

I want to share files and applications.  I have Photoshop on my machine but I cannot put it on hers.  But there are other apps, also.

    Thank you,

    Monte

If you follow what BDaqua suggests you can initiate file sharing so you can move files across computers. But you need to install applications separately. Although some applications csn be transferred without a problem, others like Photoshop will need to be installed in order to work because more is needed than just the application bundle.

Are you saying that I only have to do what BDAqua suggests to one of the two computers?  Even though each is running a different OS?

    Thanks a bunch,

    Monte

You can do it only on one, the one you wish to be connected to.

There is also Screen Sharing/VNC where you can control & run Apps on the other computer remotely.

If you want to control the 10.6 Mac from the 10.4 Mac you'll need Chicken of the VNC...

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/files/cotvnc/Chicken%20of%20the%20VNC%202 .0b4/cotvnc-20b4.dmg/download

If the other way it's all built-in, we just enable other things in Sharing.

I used the Chicen of the VNC and tried to connect.  I got this message:

"Please configure Apple Remote Desktop to allow VNC Viewers to control the screen.

    Unknown authType 30,35"

What does this mean I should do?

Being a real Newbie, you have to get down to basics.

    Thank you very much,

    Monte

On the other Machine you're trying to control/view, in System Preferences>Sharing, enable Screen Sharing or Apple Remote Desktop depending on OS, then click on the Computer Settings button & setup, click OK, then back to Allow access, click the plus icon to add certain users, also enable Remote Management, Remote Login, & Remote Apple Events.
