Aug 19, 2011 7:37 PM in response to bigdallaby jakebakessnakesincakes,I also laughed when I heard Bigdalla's fix. I tried every other fix in this discussion with no results, then I tried sucking the headphone jack as hard as I could. Wouldn't ya know it, it worked! If all else fail, do try this! Bigdalla, you mad genius.

Aug 24, 2011 2:34 PM in response to jakebakessnakesincakesby bamina,You're a genius!!! I think? Though this sounded ridiculous, it ended up fixing the problem after I had tried everything else on the forum.
Thanks a million!!!

Sep 1, 2011 8:32 PM in response to awillimdby SCVengeance,Heating up seems to be the problem or close to it. My girlfriend has never plugged her ear phones into her iphone and the iphone just recently locked into headphone mode, I ran a fan infront of the input jack for about 30 seconds then tried the key pad, It now has sound.

Sep 3, 2011 1:24 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby Klillyg,I used a blow dryer on cold to blow air into the earphone jack on the phone and it worked like a charm!

Sep 5, 2011 6:50 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby rachelita2,I just had this problem with my iPhone 4 and tried most of the solutions listed above - plugging and unplugging headphones, cleaning out the jack, restarting, etc. kirincastle's solution a few pages back just worked for me - by activating Voice Control by holding down on home button, and saying "sth" - the iPhone then went to my music collection, started playing music through the speaker, and now all is well. Very strange, but I just wanted to draw attention to this solution since it worked for me.

Sep 8, 2011 5:56 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby wizzifresh,I have found the perfect solution I dont know if there are any risks, but just unplug the headphones while your on the home screen and then use a magnet and hoover or wave it over the headphone jack a few seconds and should work like a charm. It actually worked instantly for me, but it was kind of a powerful magnet the end of a Bright Stick flashlight LOL but hey it works none the less so if someone trys and it has success yay!

Sep 18, 2011 10:50 AM in response to redoutby arthuralex77,My iPhone 4 suddenly started acting up last night. Phone would ring but I could not hear anything from iPod or YouTube (unless I plugged in headphones.) It acted like headphones were plugged in when they weren't and hadn't been for days.
Multiple insertions of a headphone did not help, but hilariously sucking hard on the headphone input hole did the trick (at least for now.) Hope I didn't inhale something a toxic but my iPhone seems to be back to normal.
Although this problem could have more than one cause it apparently has been known for years. If Apple has published anything technical explaining cuases and solutions I'd love to see it. Better yet, it would be swell if it were fixed in the iPhone 5.

Sep 29, 2011 6:03 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby mnbsbl,I literally just read through 17 pages of fixes on this forum and nothing worked! As a last ditch effort I set my hair dryer to "cool" and directed the air straight into the headphone jack for a few minutes- didn't work. I tried it again, this time for over 5 minutes, and it finally got it working! It's beyond ridiculous that this has been a known issue for 3 years and hasn't been addressed yet. C'mon Apple, we expect better than this!

Oct 11, 2011 5:51 AM in response to SoCalSkippyby powerfulsoup,ok so this was driving me crazy. iphone 4 no problems up until 2 weeks ago and it got progressively worse til it was unusable. 'this phone is not optimized......etc" as soon as it booted up. no sound out the speaker except for - occassional receive call ring, if i went to settings/sounds and went through the rings they would work but the txt msg alerts would not, no ipod through speakers, could not adjust volume via buttons without phones plugged in. i tried everything including the funny sucking on the headphone jack, restoring/resetting, headphone jack in and out heaps of times.....
my girlfriend just got a new phone and i used the sim pin tool and scrapped the dock connecter part of the phone and even though it looked clean, ended up digging out a heap of flint/crud. i was really surprised but the tool is a perfect size to really dig deep. anyways.... a bunch came out and the phone worked instantly. thanks for everyone elses comments. good luck
