Open FaceTime, click on the FaceTime menu and turn FaceTime off, don't quit it. Quit iChat and reopen it.

I had to make an account just so I could reply to this.

It did work for me but is this really the best fix? You'd think Apple would be all over this not wanting to stain Ichat's reputation of being the best option available for quality video and voice chat. Lion has been out for a month or two I think, isn't that like 7 computer years?

Well, considering it only happened once for me after maybe 50+ Lion installs, I don't think it's going to be a reputation stainer.

Tried this. Now neither FaceTime nor iChat is working.

    Hi,

Open the Activity Monitior (Applications/Utilities) and use it to Quit IMAgent

(Highlight the item and use the Quit Button and confirm Force Quit)

Thanks for taking the time to post this, Ralph!  Force quiting imagent did the trick.

I was having a lot of trouble with my iChat connections in Lion – constantly disconnecting, using AIM / Gmail.. however, after doing a clean install of my entire system (I had previously only done an update from Snow Leopard), it seems to be working much, much better.

Thanks Ralph. That was indeed the correct answer to my problem.

I think you should make this some sort of Sticky at the top of the forum.  I have been struggling for days with Ichat not connecting.  I did all the usual stuff... delete .plists from preferences, unchecked use this acount, unchecked SSL.  But this did the trick. Thank you.

It is hard to decide which of several things in iChat need to be 'At the top" of any forum.

iChat does in fact have it's own dedicated Community area

    Discussion View

This particular "fix" strangely does not work for everyone either just to add to the mix.

    However your comments are appreciated.

Yeah, thanks, Ralph, as this troubleshooting tip solved this issue for me as well this morning.

While there is a dedicated iChat discussion, I didn't see anything connected with problems within Lion, however, since the switch to this forum software, perhaps I wasn't using the proper search terms.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

Yes the Leopard and Snow Leopard forums for iChat still show as "Refine this List" items (I search for terms now and then but mostly for 'iChat")

The current Community is about where the iChat AV category (iChat 3 and iChat 2.1 & Earlier) used to be but has become one community and "lost" the iChat 2.1 and earlier forum and somewhat achieves what the regular posters wanted (One palce for iChat).

Part of the issue is also that Users Tips under the new Software have yet to permeate to many of the regular communities.

Add to that the fact that IMAgent is doing a  job for iChat and for FaceTime in Lion (difficult to know where to put a "Sticky"/Users Tip
