Q: Home Sharing drop out with Apple TV2

Just did the updates for i-tunes (10.2.1), ATV2 (4.2), and Ipad (4.3). And what I'm getting is when I stream from the computer using the ipad remote app, music starts then just stops. I go to ATV settings and turn airplay off then back on, then the music start again. Then goes out again. But if I just use the ATV, music, photos, YouTube, movies, etc.. everything works fine. It just when I stream. ATV show strong WI-FI signal. Never had any issues until I did the updates. Tried rebooting ATV, did a restart on the computer. NO GO. I'm thinking it's a home sharing issue but I don't really know. Has anyone else having any problems since the new updates? Or any ideas on what I should try. Any help would be great...
Thanks

I've been having this problem and it's driving me crazy. I'll start a movie thats being streamed over wifi from my PC, and ten minutes into the movie it will just stop playing. I'm dropped back to the movies section in the apple TV menus. I then try to play it again and its usually a few minutes back from where I was. I then can't fast forward and there is no way to get back to where I was because it will not fast foward at all.

Using an ATV2, Airport Extreme. Worked fine for months, now doesn't. My wife no longer wants to watch movies with me because everyting I put on the ATV2 it just fails us. I have watched 10 mins of several movies now. This ***** please fix

windows or Mac computer runing iTunes?

I wonder if a combo of ATV2 software update is causing problems with Snow Leopard or Lion, or even a newer version of itunes. But if you're running Windows then it could be iTunes over Lion etc.

I don't think these problems are related to the ATV software. I have my iTunes on a 2.53 Mini running lion server.  I am getting similar dropouts if I try to use home sharing to watch movies on my MacBook running iTunes and OS 10.6.  All software is up to date.

I can copy the movie file to the MacBook iTunes and it plays Ok so the file should be OK.

If I connect ethernet (cable) Mac to Mac it plays OK.

If connected ethernet or wireless Mac to Airport Extreme (Dual Band) to Mac then movie drops after about 6 minutes.

I have an ATV2 connected wirelessly. Have been having to re-enter the wireless details regularly and have also had drop outs.

Also have an ATV1 which I don't use much. It's been misbehaving as well.  Will stream some movies fine but just freezes with others. i dont know whether this is related to the same problem or whether its just old and cranky. I haven't tested it properly but it seems that the files that freeze are the same as the ones that regularly drop out on my Macbook but only if streamed through the router.

These problems are definitely strange.  Hope someone can sort it out soon.  Good luck.

My "interruptions" were in the home sharing side of things... airplay of music, itunes movies form my own collection, etc

AppleTV was saying that I had current software...

I just (9/21/11) ran a full "Restore System" on the Apple TV... which by default also fetches current software update.

    Today no issues with dropout.

Another suggestion for some users: AIrFoil by Rogue Amoeba Software. Great little app for streaming music around the house to almost any device

I started having this issue and it's driving me up the wall.  I think I may have found a cause though, if not necessarily a solution.

    Here's what I have:

    Windows 7 64-bit running iTunes 10.4.1.10 - Wired

    iPhone 4 GSM - Wireless

    iPhone 3GS - Wireless

    iPad 2 - Wireless

    AppleTV 2 - Wired

My network is all static IP address based and my router is a d-link and nothing but a windows firewall.

I started having the problems of frequent library streams dropping at random intervals even though I could immediately page over in AppleTV and start watching netflix with no problems.  So no network issues or anything.  Also, when the library disappears from AppleTV, it disappeared from all devices.

However, I noticed when trying to mess with home sharing on my phone, that this seemed to force a dropped connection on AppleTV.  I tested this a few times using my iphone 4 and anytime I reinput the AppleID and pass into the settings and then tried to pull up the More option in the ipod function (in order to get the shared libraries to show) the appleTV stream would quit.  So, could this be related to a possible home sharing conflict of some type when multiple devices are trying to stream from 1 library?

I would be interested to see if anyone else can confirm this.

The most frustrating part is that my photo library will still come up as the screen saver, it's only the library that drops.  Most irritating!

    Fixes I've tried:

    reinstalling iTunes

    Full AppleTV restore

I don't know if this could help but i I also started to have this issue a few weeks ago (it has been working perfectly for me for the past year) but it started after I replaced my old linksys router for an airport extreme 5th Gen (thinking that having all apple products should only help)...

    I'm have 2 apple TV 2 (1 over WIFI and 1 wired)

2011 Imac (Wired) with the Itune library on it

(ipad and iphones running the remote app)

rebooting the airport extreme seems to fix it also for me... but only for a few hours... It helped things when I manually change the wireless channels but the issue is still occuring.

Well I've had great luck with disabling home sharing on devices that didn't need it. Turned it off on my iPhones and iPad since it didn't work correctly to begin with and now the issue has disappeared. I realize this isn't a good solution for those with more than 1 appleTV, but it's working great for me.

I've mentioned on a similar thread about "Apple TV streaming drop out"...

Those events are often connected to other network issues like wifi cut off, lousy file transfer speed, bad Internet connection and so on.

In most cases these issues are not related to Apple TV, iTunes or DLNA-Server's because it's mostly a network issue regardless of wireless or wired.

Check your router logs for similar entry's at the time of a drop out:

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5    Idle timeout for station 00:1e:....

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5   Disassociating with station 00:1e:....

    Sep 22 12:22:27    Severity:5    Disassociated with station 00:1e:...

Check station's (Express / A-TV) logs for time matching similar entry's like:

Aug 22 10:54:30    Severity: 4    "xyz" stream from fe80:.... stopped.

Aug 22 11:04:22    Severity: 5    Disconnected from network.

    Aug 22 11:04:49    Severity: 5    Joined BSS b8:c7:.....

Aug 22 11:04:49    Severity: 5    Installed unicast CCMP key for authenticator b8:c7:....

If you have entry's like that in the logfiles at the time the stream drop:

    • Troubleshoot your network on settings, infrastructure, interferences and so on.

Even if a problem sound similar to your's it's definitively different to other's problem.

Open your own question about your problem in the network branch (or other matching one) of the community and describe your problem as good as you can. Give all information about your network you have and think it could be useful for others to help you solving your problem.

It might also be due to other software running.

Like I had mentionned in a previous post, my iMac Lion is running a webserver, and was also running a WeBDAV server called MediaMaster Server so I could connect my ATV2-XBMC combo onto my iMac.

I finally figured out that MediaMaster Server interfered severely with the Home Sharing. Now that I got rid of it, I haven't had any other problems. I'm Home Sharing with my ATV2, my iPad, wired and wireless, Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base Station (4th gen), going in and out of XBMC on the ATV2 (which is now using AFP as the network protocol) and it just works. Like it used to.

So I do believe Lupunus's post (above) hits it right on the nail. It might sound like we all have the same problem, but we all have different configurations, and there is something interfering for each one of our setup.

Everyone in this thread needs to take a step back, and see what other networking software they are using that might be interfering.

Good luck, and let us know your findings!

    Yes, that could be too.

I think "Home Sharing" is the evil in this game.

For such my DLNS server went crazy after the last iTunes update and accidentally activated feckin "home sharing" which scrambled all up on the account. I've still no working solution and have to use a newly created clean account on the Mac to stream TV.

I reported this problem with my ATV 2 some weeks ago. In between I discovered a problem with my Time Capsule's wifi network interface. It was about 4 years old. I decided to buy a new Time Capsule and this fixed my wifi problems. It also fixed my ATV 2 problem. I have been testing it for sometime now to make sure the problem did not return. I also upgraded the ATV 2 software and OS-X to Lion. I am glad to say that there have not been any problems at all.

I think many of the problem reported in this post are network related. Some have found success by using the ethernet LAN instead of a wifi connection. I sort of stumbled onto the cure for my problem. Perhaps everyone should look at the stability, signal levels, transmission errors with their wifi network. Try another wifi router if possible. It may be as simple as all that.

I'm still having issues. THese are new for me (as of 4 days ago). Here's my configuration:

    Dlink NAS connected to router

    Dlink DIR-655 Gigabit Router

    iMac 24" running lion

    Macbook 15.4 inch running lion

    2 iphones

    2 ATVs

I've had the atv 2's for a while and they have been running flawlessly. I haven't changed anything to my network at all so the only thing I can point to is a software update on the ATVs. I have no internet connectivity problems at all. I'm on the internet all day as part of my work and never experience any drop outs. I have homesharing on both computers and they pick up eachother's libraries but the ATVs suddenly have an issue with them. I've been told it's probably a router issue, but I'm not seeing the connection. Everthing else works on the router but my ATVs.

I'm tempted to chuck these things out the window and get boxee or something if I can't get a solution soon. Apple tells me to reset the ATV or router or restore to factory settings, disable homesharing and then re-enable and these all work....temporarily. Frustrated, mainly because these have worked so flawlessly up until a few days ago.

    Help? Any suggestions?

The only thing that works for me is to unplug and replug the ATV2. Eh, not a "fix" but it works. I'm not gonna let it frustrate me any longer. Life is too short.
