Let's be honest, are you really sorry to say that? =)

Most arguments I'm hearing come down to: Versions and auto-save are different and I don't understand them and I don't want to understand them. I don't want to change how I've worked for 23 years. People are upset because they don't want to change how they've worked for a long time. They liked the old way just fine. Fine. Valid point. I'm just trying to help people understand how the new way works and that it's really not so bad once you learn how to use it. Because let's face it, these changes are here to stay and people will need to learn how they work eventually one way or another. Call me a fanboy all you want, it won't change the fact that the new features are here to stay and you're either going to have to learn how to use them or just never upgrade your computer or software ever again.

PJ I think you underestimate the IQ of the posters. I always ubderstood how it works and no one here ever asked anyone to explain how it works so your infopostings will not further our cause! maybe someone else will find them usefull...were just saying its an unconfigurable system thats being imposed.

With regards to this never changing, maybe your correct but Apple has gone back on plenty of stuff (thats the inteligent thing to do) there is no shame in adjusting. I think its very clever of Apple to listen to people. point in case being the SD card slot, the end to firewire, the end to USB the old FCP, change to intel, change from nvidia to radeon and backand forth.... and on and on. I supoose things evolve and some need tweaking! Its all about money and whats the best way to get the last buck.

When and If I have to change to Lion I will never buy software that does not alow me to configure it, no more Pages no more Numbers, keynote, no apperture, no FcpX  and I will find a way to tweak in terminal what I dont like.

For the moment its SL and Adobe/Microsoft for me

I believe you understand it. But there's some posts that clearly reveal others don't - like the Macintouch author.

I don't think Apple is going to back down on this one because with all those other things, I couldn't help but hear about them. So far, this thread is the only place where I've heard complaining about this change. I haven't heard it in the mainstream tech channels (granted, I've been busy, maybe I've missed it)

I invite you to reproduce any post of mine in which I've done this.

You tried to moderate his comments in that post. You didn't like him telling you what to do so you made an ad hominem attack trying to shut him down. If you don't like his opinion, or mine, just ignore it.

Apple has started allowing this site to become a blog, so if you can't handle blog posts, don't play.

    Ad hominem:

attacking an opponent’s motives or character rather than the policy or position they maintain

an attempt to negate the truth of a claim by pointing out a negative characteristic or belief of the person advocating it. (Me: or by extension, the forum in which the person posted the claim)

So ad hominem attacks are OK when the person who made them first espouses your position?

If you feel I'm attempting to "moderate" this board by calling for maximum freedom of expression and speaking out against its suppression, regardless of the opinion or the source of it, then I don't know what more to say.

If you don't like his opinion, or mine, just ignore it.

I assume you would want your sage counsel to apply to etresoft as well. After all, if he had followed your dictum, we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we?

Really, though, I think you've hit upon a great formula for how all discussion forums should operate. Everyone simply posts their opinions, and ignores the ones they don't like. Boy, we'll get some lively exchanges of ideas going that way for sure!

Can we return this thread to the topic of how rubbish the lack of 'Save As' is please?

Why would we want to do that. The new Duplicate, Versions, Resume are fabulous. I never want to go back.

I never have to worry about saving. When I have to restart, everything comes back the way I left it. I don't have to manually track versions of documents as the OS does it for me. Why would I want to go back to all of that headache?

But it's not a discussion forum. It's a place for users to get technical support from other users. None of us can fix your technical support issue, but yet you keep going on, and on, and on about how you feel about the change. The only people who might possibly care about how you feel hang out here.

Well, there are plenty of reasons that have been articulated - read the thread.

Quote "Why would I want to go back to all of that headache?"

It isn't headache. It's called "working".

For example: try editing, undoing, cropping, adjusting, editing again, undoing, hundreds of times, any photograph, switching the file between Photoshop and Graphic Converter to perform different tasks, and then finally saving it when you're happy with it.

For another example: try receiving a draft written document from a colleague that you need to work on. Try opening it in Word, and then in Pages, and then back in Word again, as you do different things to it, reformatting, deleting parts of text, adding new bits, rewriting it, undoing what you've done, etc.

And then saving it and sending it back to the colleague as an attachment, for further changes to be made.

Evidently these are things you don't do. I don't know what world you live in but what I have just described is how many people work. Apple has just gone and made that impossible.

Well said Tom, that is just the scenario I encountered on a frequent basis, now I have jpgs set to open in Photoshop so I no longer use Preview or Graphic Converter.

    Sure, I never do that.

When somebody send me a Word document, I don't open it, I trash it immediately.

I even did that when a notary public sent administrative documents after my father's death.

This being was bored but he sent new documents in a format which I accept to open.

Hazell - Graphic Converter is cool. The latest update for Lion does include the Autosave feature Apple is trying to force all software writers to incorporate, but in GC it's turned *off* by default so if, for any strange reason, you might want it, it's there for you.

Hopefully Adobe will implement it the same way in Photoshop.
