Q: one of our iPhone 3g[s] battery just rapidly expanded, the motherboard bent, broke and the glass popped off the lcd, The phone was not water damaged at all, all indicator stickers are white. is this common?

i opened the phone after seeing the randomly ripped open iphone.  i found that all the screws holding the motherboard down had been ripped off due to the intense pressure of the battery pushing upwards. im surprised the bottom casing stays un-cracked. it was NOT overheating as it was kept off in a box without any user interraction... Is this common? and what caused it?  This is very dangerous and a cause to concernIMG_1446[1].JPG

not likely that it will explode but not likely that it will make it

not common but have been known to happen with li-ion batts

You do not want to touch the contents of that battery if it should "explode" leak. Put that back case with the battery in a sealed plastic bag.

That battery appears to be from an early model 3GS, but if you have AppleCare Coverage, take to Apple Store for resolution, along with all the parts.

I have only second hand knowledge from friends that had battery "explode" and damage iPhone like that, it only occurred during faulty charging experiences, one was with wet iPhone plugged in, go figure.
