Q: iMac 2011 - no wifi connection after sleep under Lion

since i am using osx lion, my iMac is disconnected from my wireless network after sleep. (27 inch mid 2011, i5 with 2tb and ssd) (it states, that none of my preferred connections are available). sometimes it is connected ... but internet just won`t work.

besides that wifi is working just perfectly ... no drops no instability!

i am using airport extreme with 5ghz n-network, router is about 10 meters away (full signal).

under snow leopard i didnt experience any problems ... but since lion (which i am using since GM release) its really annoying because after every sleep i need to deactivate wifi and reactivate to connect.

i tried smc and pram reset ... changed my 5ghz settings to channel 36, deleted all other networks, did a reinstall (fresh!!) ... nothing helped

this is NOT an airport station issue ... my other macs and iPhone are connected just fine.

please, this is VERY annoying .... if you have any hints i would be very grateful!

with kind regards,

felix

Been a while since I updated on this ribbonbut I finally have the fixes I needed. As far as Safari opening pages slowlywhen using a hard wired connection Apple finally came up with the fix. Turns outthe DNS Prefetch often asks for more then your provider allows. The quick fix,and believe me it works, is to turn off Prefetch using Terminal. Open Terminaland type in “defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled-boolean false” then hit enter. Clean out youcache, close Safari then open it again. Should have no problems after that.

Before posting your answer please read the thread title and the subject.

Your solution is just about an issue with Safari with wired connected set up.

We're in difficulty in make the wifi connection reliable.

The wifi issue made web store and other interest dependent application unusable.

It's the same issue regardless of wired or wifi. Didn't you know?

    Nope. They're different!

The thread issue is a wifi related problem and it happens when Lion wakes from sleep.

Your suggestion is about working around the slowness of Safari in the WIRED connection (i.e. DNS related) ?

Since I changed to wired connection I don't experience such Wifi connection issue that folks posts nor the Safari issue that you suggest to fix.

I am not the poster you think I am. The issue IS the same whether you want to believe it or not.

If you can explain exactly what you did to help others that would be great - then other people will be able to clarify whether that helps them. Does swapping back to wifi from wired then bring the problem back? Swapping from wired to wifi never solved my problem. Have you submitted feedback to Apple like a lot of us? Are you taking part in the beta Apple seed? Has Apple released an official fix yet? As I am still not using Lion since reverting back to SL I have no idea if one has been forthcoming ...

Sorry. I was annoyed by receiving an email not relavant to the problem.

You provided a solution for 'Safari thing in WIRED connection'.

The subject is about 'WIFI disconnecting after sleep'.  If so, can you tell me if your solultion fixes for the mail program and app store after the wifi issue? All internet applications can't be usable with the situation.

In fact I noticed my iMac lost the ip address so your DNS cache is NOT relavant.

Yes, I've submitted this issue to Apple (both online and applecare).

The wifi disconnecting issue seems more than one cause, multiple scenarios bring similar symtom.

I changed to wired as it's faster than wifi connection anyway so it's obvious to use wired if I can connect to.

Yeah like I said I'm not the poster who gave any solution ... read the forum properly, maybe?

The issue of BOTH wifi AND ethernet not waking after sleep is EXACTLY the same. Hope that helps you understand clearer. You will find ethernet users posting on wifi threads and wifi users posting on ethernet threads because the problem is exactly the same regardless of which you are using.

I was personally experiencing the problem with wifi NOT reconnecting after waking from sleep, upon Lion installation and just now got around to trying to fix it. Ethernet did NOT present the same problems for me, but it is unrealistic for me to use it based on my home office situation, where I must use wifi.

My solution was simple, I just deleted every remembered wifi network from the list under the "network prefs/airport/advanced/wifi" selection EXCEPT for the current one. Have put the computer to sleep for varied time lengths since and have connected fine everytime after waking.

For those that don't want to scrap all their networks (Starbucks hotspots, work wifi, girlfriend's house, etc.) it's best to start using "Locations" which is a pull down menu under system prefs/network, towards the top. It just isolated the connections better than jumbling them all through Wifi settings. You simply create and set up each location with its own connection (girlfriend's/starbucks/etc) so that when you are at another location, you will have to go to Apple Menu/Location/[your location here]  - I know its not the most convenient to switch, but there are a number of other ways this is much better for your computer (google it - it's out there).

    Hope this helps someone.

Hey everyone give this a try, it worked for me...

I was having the same problems as everyone here is describing, I bought another MBP, came with Lion and worked fine until the update. Wi-fi connected okay after a restart or if I turned the wi-fi off and then on but when it was coming out of sleep it would take a minute or two for an internet connection.

I fixed mine by resetting the smc. I've put it in sleep mode about five times now and my web pages now load the way they did after I bought it, no more waiting.

Give it a try. If you don't know how to reset it, Google it, it's easy.

OK! I called apple and was finally helped, I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!

    go to your Network Preferences

Click the Advanced button in the bottom right hand corner and look at the list of Preferred Networks:

You will see a list with Network Names and the Security

Make sure your main network (whatever it is named) is at the TOP! AND DELETE ANY UNNECESSARY NETWORKS. I just went through and deleted all the others that I dont use anymore, old wireless connections or other places I went that cluttered up the signal it must have been getting.

Now when my computer wakes from sleep it works fine! I am on a 27 inch iMac with Lion

    hope this works for you!
