Q: Time Machine error?

I recently purchased a lacie 2TB harddrive from the apple store. I have an intel 2 core duo iMac from 2009. I recently upgraded to lion and bought the external drive for use with time machine. I connected the drive formatted it appropriatly as the forums have said and set it up for time machine. TM initial backup went fine but hourly backups gave me the error that "an error occured while creating the backup folder". I have erased and zero'd the drive. I changed the name and deleted the time machine prefrence files. Whenever I force the disk to unmount or I restart my computer TM will always back up fine once or twice then back to the error message. I have it connected via USB and the drive is new and works fine for all other tasks. I downloaded TM error log and it is giving me these messages pretty much over and over.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS time machine backups that complete work perfectly and i can view them and restore from them appropriatly.

I am actually having the same problem with my recently purchased LaCie P'9231 1TB. Just contacted their support and I hope they give me a good explanation why this is happening. If there is no helpful solution, I'm returning the HD. This is the error log I get:

    Starting standard backup

Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Disk/Backups.backupdb

    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/Time Machine Disk/Backups.backupdb/Kyle Phillip Montalvan's iMac size:37

    Backup failed with error: 2

I think it has to do with the drive going into "Eco Mode" and failing at wake (Eco Mode starts after 5 minutes of inactivity and there is no way of preventing it).

Just to let you know if you're still having problems, they contacted me back saying to erase the LaCie disk using the "Zero Out Data" feature in Disk Utility. Took 8 hours, and in the end, I'm returning the Disk. To many complications and it doesn't work as advertised. Here's what I responded to the support staff at LaCie with:

"After waiting for 8 hours so it can Zero out the data, it backed up fine at around 8PM. Then it went into Eco Mode probably around 5AM (because I had another Mac backing up to it on my network). Now at around 11:00 AM (still in Eco Mode), I come to an error that there was a back up problem. I went into Finder and pressed the Disk so it could get out of Eco Mode and completely turn on. Tried to back up with Time Machine and an error came up (while the disk was completely on). So today I'll be returning it to the Apple Store. The outside is beautiful, but I'm not going to keep a faulty piece of aluminum that doesn't work as advertised. Thank you for the help. You might want to look into the "Eco Mode" feature. From what I've experienced, that is the problem."

I won't be buying another LaCie HD again.

Just a 'me too' and my experience.

This August I bought (2) LaCie P'9231 1TB (from Apple Store), one for each of our intel iMacs.

One iMac runs Leopard, the other Snow leopard.

On both systems, Time Machine works on first back up after remounting the LaCie, or a reboot.

Always fails and reports errors on consequential back ups.

Spongeman: your 'LaCie's Eco Mode incompatibility' idea is interesting and possible, but other Mac people seem to be able to make it work, no?

Still need to discover what the problem is for a fact.

I ended up purchasing a G-Drive 750 GB Mobile at the Apple Store based on the high reviews. It was more expensive than the LaCie and has less storage space, but I have not had one single problem in the two weeks I've been backing up. And it's much faster because of the FireWire 800 port.

If people with Macs have gotten it to work perfectly without glitches or errors, hopefully they'll share

    Also,

    - phoned LaCie and the guy said he's "heard this Eco Mode/Time Machine issue at least 10x before".

    - I then wrote an email to LaCie and they replied "there are no issues with Eco Mode & Time Machine".

    Pick your favorite answer.

So, I'm going to Return Mode...returning both LaCie P'9231 units.

    The G-Drive looks pretty good.

I believe I've found a solution for this issue.

Background: LaCie's 'Eco Mode' firmware is built-in on some of their drives (we're using a couple of  P'9231 1TB) Eco Mode does not work with Time Machine's consecutive, hourly backups. (using intel iMacs, we tried using both Leopard & Snow OS).

Solution: download a third party applet to keep the drive awake.

I found 'Keep Drive Spinning' (freeware) to work perfectly.

Pros: Time Machine now backs up on the hour without errors, as it's supposed to.

Cons: Dunno...perhaps keeping the drive awake may shorten it's life, and probably will consume a bit more power.

    Hope this helps someone.

I really didn't think that it would be so simple as downloading freeware to fix the problem, but I guess it is. It still bugs me that as an "Apple Store Exclusive", it isn't easy to use and doesn't work well with a Mac. The user/customer has to go a step further and download software to get it to work. I'm still glad that a solution was found; not what people should have to do to get their HD to work right, but it helps.

I still don't reccommend LaCie though!
