Q: AirPrint on non supported (shared) printers-HowTo OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574

What you might want to try (I found that on a German Blog some hours ago):

From *System Preferences* remove existing printer(s)

launch AppleScript editor
cut&paste the following 2 lines:

*do shell script "echo '# enable AirPrint*

*image/urf urf (0,UNIRAST<00>)' > /usr/share/cups/mime/airprint.types" with administrator privileges*

run that script and enter your admin pw

This will create text-file @ /usr/share/cups/mime/ that will (should) re-enable AirPrint support again (at least on the current build of OS X 10.6.5 10H574), which can easily be removed.

reboot

add printer(s) again + share them through *System Preferences*

Keep in mind that this patched MAC (OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574) must be up and running in order to use AirPrint!

It works for me, but if it doesn't work for you for whatever reasons: *failure is always an option!*

MacPro 8-Core - MBPro Air+13"+15" - MacMini - PowerMac G5 - 1st Gen iBook - Cube, Mac OS X (10.6.3), 100 Mbit FibreDSL - DVB(C) - several iPods - DOT MobileMe

Very interesting. I was going to suggest the fix to some friends that have
iPhones and was told there is no print options in the iPhones so I did not
bother. Excuse my dumb question but I do not use an iPhone

    aRKay-

If there is an iPhone that does not have the print option, it needs to have its system updated.

I don't have an iPhone either, but have an iPad. Early iPhones, as well as early iPads did not have print options. When the operating system was updated to iOS4, print capability was added.

It was added with iOS 4.2.1, at the same time as the iPad.

This worked first time. Very useful indeed! Saves some trips up and down the stairs.
Not sure if this was fixed in 10.6.6 but I think it should be enabled by default.

Can anybody confirm that this is working on the iPad 2 with 4.3.1?

I did not run the scripts in this thread but very similar ones found here:

    http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?t=114652

Check the middle of the page for the ChuckG link. There are instructions for out to enable it.

I have been running it perfectly fine since I installed it on my iPhone 4 (s/w version 4.3) with my Macbook Pro running 10.6.5 and 10.6.6.

I just got my iPad 2 today and noticed that I am not able to locate the Printer with it. I updated it to 4.3.1 as soon as I took it out of the box. My mac is running 10.6.7 and here is the strange part... my iPhone (running 4.3.1 as well) is still able to Print to my Epson printer. When I am in Mail, I am able to hit the Print button, I see the Epson printer listed there, and I am able to print. However, when I actually press the button that says printer, it starts searching the network for all available printers, and fails to find any. At this point I just hit back, and the field still says Epson and I am still able to print just fine from the iPhone. I've tried several restarts and adding/removing the printer, but I still am only able to print from the iPhone, but not the iPad 2.

Any takers on helping me figure this one out? I'm sure there's someone smart on here who likes a challenge

    Worked perfectly with:

iMac27 late 2009, HP PSC 1500 series, iPad
    Mac OS X 10.6.7, iOS 4.3.1

Many thanks. Is there a problem with iPad 2 I wonder?

    Kay,

Just wanted to let you know this does work with future builds of OS X since posted, I am using it with Lion. Although, the AppleScript Editor had me make 2 changes. I had to remove 2 of the asterisks, the first and last asterisk to reflect:

do shell script "echo '# enable AirPrint*

    *image/urf urf (0,UNIRAST<00>)' > /usr/share/cups/mime/airprint.types" with administrator privileges

    J. Knox,

I can confirm that this is working on the iPad 2 with 4.3.5?

I ran the scripts in this thread but see the changes I had to make above.

Both of those asteriks are hold-overs from the old version of the forum software. They used to display text in bold or something. Plus, it was a convoluted example to begin with because it included a comment and was spread across two lines. The following is correct:

do shell script "echo 'image/urf urf (0,UNIRAST<00>)' > /usr/share/cups/mime/airprint.types" with administrator privileges

This will come in handy -- my old printer just died, and I'd rather buy something other than the handful of AirPrint printers HP offers.

    But a few questions:

-- If I'm using a network printer, will this also work?  (My current printer is not shared thru Sys Prefs / Sharing, but is simply on the home network.)

-- Will the Mac we add the script to (in my case, my wife's) need to be on when other computers in the house try to print to the printer?   (I understand that the AirPrint script requires a Mac to be on when you print from iOS, I'd rather not require that this Mac needs to be on when OTHER Macs in the house want to print.  Not critical, but a nice to have ... since sometimes my wife's computer is not on when I'm working on my laptop late at night.)

-- How to jibe a multi-printer situation with your instructions to delete the printer from Sys Prefs, add the script, and then "add printer(s) again + share them through *System Preferences* " ?   I have 2 printer drivers on my wife's computer, so will this script and printer-sharing affect the second one? (It's a Dymo printer, so IOS and most Mac apps should NOT be printed to it!)  Can I skip the "delete the printer from System Preferences" step for this second printer?

    Thanks!

I am not sure the above facetious post reflects printing with non airprint printers. Several of the above confirm they were able to print with the ipad2.
