Q: New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well.  In fact I have read an interesting article

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/thunderbolt_macbook_pro_suffers_flickerin g_display_issues/

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

I put in a 3 meter length mini display extension cable yesterday between my 24" ACD and the TB port on my new mac mini and had a day without screen flicker/blackouts. Keeping my fingers crossed. Early days. Will report back after a few more days.

Spoke too soon. Multiple screen blackouts on startup today. Had to unplug and then re-connect the display to get it to behave. The curse of new technology still there. Come on apple, give us a fix for this.

My new Mac Mini Server seems to work fine. The other day I got one flicker and at two instances I have seen two blackouts but at all times that has occurred when using Citrix and I think it is unimportant. Still thing the AMD configuration seems to be the main problem. Stollo knocking on wood though.

Strangely enough, for the past few days, having put in a 3m mini display extension cable between my 24" apple LED cinema display and my new thunderbolt mac mini, the screen problems have all but disappeared. I think just 1 brief blackout in a week, as opposed to getting repeated 1-2 second blackouts multiple times per day. As things are now, I can live with this. Would suggest anyone with this problem gives this solution a try. Can get the cables from apple, eBay or amazon.

Hi all, there is a brand new iodate for the ACD24. This seems to fix the problem.

    Great, thanks for the news.

My monitor is at work, so no testing for the moment, but will update asap.

Strange enough this update don't show up when I search the Apple support page..

Just installed.  Screen shaking when starting.  Blacked out two times during the update (rebooting?).  Now stable.  Since it sometimes goes away for a few hours will have to wait and see if it is a full fix.

    Thanks for the link!

It's even worst with new 27" Thunderbolt display!

I get the feeling you people would take a random drug if someone on the street gave it to you- because that is what you just did with your monitors.

@meraTechStuff - it even says 24" on the URL and the dmg! [I think you mean worse]

Unless there is an official Apple update page be very weary about updating firmware. A little bird told me that these firmware updates are specific to particular series of monitors.

    Hello,

I have downloaded and apply the fix to my ACD 24". No flickering so far, but time will tell as it is very random by nature.

Out of curisioty, where the page describing the update? The link only provide the link to the download, not the description of the fix?

    Thanks,

    Charles

    Hello all,

I got this update from Apple's 2nd level support. I have an open ticket since quite a while and called them probably 10 times in 2 months. This afternoon I received a phone call from them telling me that the problem was still under investigation but no solution was found yet. A few hours later I received a mail with the link I've posted previously. (attached mail in french....)

I have to say that so far I had absolutely no flickering. I use to have flickering for around 5 minutes at start up or when resuming from sleeping mode.

Hope this will work for more people.

    My config:

    Mac mini i7 2.7 GHz

    8 Gb RAM

AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB

    ACD24 2009

Thank you very much for sharing this! I have been speaking to two senior advisors from Ireland for the past 2 months, and no resolution!

    Merci beaucoup,

My monitor freaked out imediately after the firmware fix was applied.  But after a reboot and cycle of the monitor, the flickering is 100% gone.  The fix works fantastic for me.
