Sep 20, 2011 1:42 PM in response to iFrodoby pgray,The lastest patch might be targeted to address the 27" Thunderbolt display but in desperation I applied it anyways.
Big mistake. Since applying it my screen flicker my problem has gotten much much worse. I am seeing flickers every 2 minutes or so.
I have a 30 inch Dell connected by Apple's Dual Link DVI connector to my 2011 15inch Sandy Bridge MacBook Pro.

Sep 20, 2011 3:44 PM in response to pgrayby missilemike,By some miracle, the 15' extension cable worked for me. Not a single flicker since I hooked it up, through 16 hours of use. YMMV of course.

I don't think you applied the Thunderbolt DIsplay Firmware Update on your ACD 24", it's simply impossible to do so, and is not even offered as software update if you don't have a 27" Thunderbolt display and will refuse to install if you try to download and apply it manually (obviously).
You certainly applied the two updates (EFI firmware update 2.2, and Thunderbolt update 1.0) that came before the Thunderbolt DIsplay Firmware update, but certainly not the thunderbolt display update.

Sep 21, 2011 7:55 AM in response to DanRybby davidbatista,Just wanted to join the club of 2011 15" MBP owners having issues with the 24" display. I have been on the phone with Apple five times now over this issue and I am still having problems. I have to say that I am really shocked that Apple has completely dropped the ball on this one. About three years ago I instituted a wholesale change from PC to Mac for myself personally and everyone in my company (this includes computers, monitors, servers, iPhones, iPads, and iPods). Luckily, I am the only one that has a Thunderbolt computer at this point (the CEO gets the cool toys first). The joke is on me... I have about 7 24" displays deployed in my company and there is no way I am going to upgrade anyone else to Thunderbolt machines unless this gets fixed.

Sep 21, 2011 8:13 AM in response to DanRybby martinws,I've also installed the firmware fix on my 2011 15" MBP am still getting the black out issue (on average once a hour) on the my 24in LED display.
I cannot believe this was not fixed in this update. I think it is time for me to nag Apple support directly.

Sep 21, 2011 8:26 AM in response to DanRybby Toni100,It is impossible. I am from germany and here ii is an unknown issue. I am the only user with this Problem. After 4 month daily contact with the support manager, i get a 27" ACD by paying the difference to my old 24" ACD (165 EUR). No more problemes!!!

Sep 21, 2011 10:58 AM in response to Toni100by NicoNB,Just after the new TB 1.0 update I was hopefull that this would solve the problem. It seemed pretty stable for a few hours. But now the flickering is back.
This is going on with my iMac for 4 months now.

Sep 22, 2011 7:33 AM in response to DanRybby xpastr,"Pulled the trigger" yesterday on the new Thunderbolt ACD
- sold my ACD & an iPod Touch I won as a door prize to local store who sells Apple products
- took Apple up on their "generous" $200 discount (ha)
- the unit shipped the same day and will arrive tomorrow
Has anyone else cut their losses and currently using the new display?

I don't have the 24" ACD, however I decided to cut my losses with a previous setup and simply buy a referb 27" iMac I intend to use as a display using the Belkin thunderbolt hub with almost the identical benefits of the thunderbolt display (I'll only need to plug in one thunderbolt cable and power to my MacBookAir)...and still have a functional workstation when not plugged in. The iMac was only $300 more including tax. I did a small video on the connection options and arrangement here.

Sep 23, 2011 12:15 PM in response to pgrayby samaki,Count me in. Weird but not quite as big a bug to be disruptive.

Sep 23, 2011 12:53 PM in response to DanRybby sprocketnyc,Same issue, had a 15' MBP with the 24' ACD and it worked flawlessly, hooked it up to a new i7 Mac Mini, and I get the screen blanking. It seems to be worse when the display is cold ( after the machine has been off or in sleep )

Sep 23, 2011 2:49 PM in response to DanRybby Joey Diaz,So today I finally got resolution with Apple. I paid $200 and traded in my old 24" monitor for the new thunderbolt 27". I think it's a pretty good deal to get a bigger and better monitor for my older, smaller, non compliant monitor. I think this is the route people should go if they need a monitor now since there doesn't seem to be any resolution anytime soon.

Sep 23, 2011 3:11 PM in response to xpastrby Joey Diaz,I first went into the Apple store and showed them the problem and this message board. A couple days later I called Apple corporate and then one week later I received a call from the Apple store business unit and they agreed to the deal I had placed before them noting that there were others that got this deal. Pretty simple transaction. Apple does a good job if you just ask them.

Sep 23, 2011 8:42 PM in response to Joey Diazby BarrettF77,Thanks Joey. Took your advice. Your posting this certainly helped my situation out. I am flicker free with a new display. The store was a godsend and now I can continue with purchasing more Macs later on.
A shortsight I think Apple often has. There are some not so helpful people within the company, meanwhile, there are those who are just the opposite. If I had known about the issues when I bought my first thunderbolt Mac then this would have been a non-issue. However, I am glad to say that I consider the matter resolved and closed.
