Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass screen.

    I'm not advertising anything just trying to let people know what I tried and what helped someone else.  I think it is a helpful post.  Maybe not for you Dan but someone else might find it helpful.....what isn't helpful is your response but hey......I guess you have nothing better to do.....get a life DAN!  Its people like you that insist on wasting everyones time with your OPINION like it actually matters!

    While I'm here, the marks behind the screen continue to get worse, gradually spreading across to the middle and getting darker.

    I'll have to take some time out of work to get it sorted at some stage...

    And I'm tired of these posts talking about "just pop off the screen, it's easy to clean" comments. This is a major defect in a rather expensive product from a company that has a reputation for outstanding support. There shouldn't be any need to get suction cups and pull off the screen. And your friend isn't bothered by the grey streaks anymore? C'mon! Give me a break.

    You know guys must really be stupid if you think that Monster or Best Buy are paying me to sell their stuff, I mean seriously....did you see me post any link on the product, NO.  Did you hear me say Hey I work for Monter and we have a great product you should go out and buy, NO.  I don't know if you just don't know how to read or have no common sense but if thats what you think then I guess there's no help for you.  Sorry for trying to give back to the Apple community with some information, it may not be the Solve all problems solution everyone is hoping for but that isn't going to happen anyways.  DeepRoot, seriously you are an idiot.  You come down on others who are just trying to help.  I don't care if you ever get your problem fixed.  ******* on a forum isn't gonna get Apple to recall millions of machines so if you wanna be an internet tough guy then flame on!  Here's two ways it can go:


    1. Get it replaced by apple through warranty and hope it doesn't happen again

    2. Get it replaced with money from your pocket and hope it doesn't happen again


    I understand its a design flaw and it is something they should address and hopefully they will with the new iMacs, but guess what......that isn't gonna help you with your computer becuase they aren't just gonna give everyone new computers.


    So much for trying to help out others......I'm glad your screen is messed up DeepThroat....I mean DeepRoot and I hope you never get the problem fixed just becuase of your stupidity.  Maybe your grey streaks are a result from watching too much ****   I like how you quoted my "please give it a try" <= Because that really sounds like a sales ad....moron.



    For anyone else out there it was just a tip and I gave all that specific information so nobody would have to ask what i used or where i got it from IF they wanted to give it a try.  And yeah he was happy with what it looked like....maybe the grey streaks will bother him in a day or two, but some progress was better than nothing for him at the time so whateves.


    Good luck to everyone else out there with the problem....I hope you all get your resolutions.

    Anyway, back to this problem: I too have (had) the same thing happen to my 24" iMac. It is not actually dust. It is gases escaping from the heated plastics within the machine. However, it is easy to fix. I went to the ¥100 shop and bought a packet of suction cup bathroom hooks, popped the glass off, cleaned it all up and popped it back in. The whole process took me less than 90 minutes including going to the ¥100 shop. The amount of time some people have spent on this thread complaining about it they could have cleaned it 20 times. Have a look at iFixit website for a video tutorial on how to pop the glass off. It is easier than making a cup of coffee.

    I've been reading your emails, and i am surprised to see how many of us are suffering with the same problem.

    I bought my 27" MAc in April 2010, and in December 2010 was sent for repairs at Mac. It was returned 1 week later with a new LCD. Now that the warranty has expired my problem has returned. I must admit i've been slow in sending it to them. I am a photographer and i am struggling to get my work done properly.

    I will be taking my Mac in this week, in tow with all the printed pages from this forum, and i will demand that  fix my Mac at no cost. Sicne this seems to actually be a common problem for them and not caused by me. If it was caused by me no prob i will pay for repair but not when is not my fault. I will keep you all posted on my story and i'm waiting to see how great their service is going to be.

    I have the same issue with my 8,1 Imac 24".  It shows in the center near the top and after I disassembled the entire unit to fix my GPU (8800GS Nvidia Solder Faults), I noticed the marks were near where the cpu was.  It is definately caused by heat.  No amount of rubbing or cleaner will remove the burn marks because they originate from the rear.


    For those with marks in the corner, I can only speculate that this is where the hot air flows around before it finds the escape vent in the rear.


    I've had my fans cranked since 2009 when I first started having problems (HDD Failure, GPU failure).. I had to take the unit a part and actually baked the GPU in the oven at 425 F for 15 minutes and the solder filled in the cracks.  I then pasted the CPU/GPU with some quality Aluminumoxide compound and the machine has ran much cooler.


    It's about time for me to upgrade so I have been looking in to compatible hardware to run LION.  <Edited by Host>


    The OS is not Apple anymore since they adopted a LINUX core, the hardware looks nice but it is not designed well.  The aluminum iMacs and MBPs run too hot, period.  The aluminum does NOT act like a heat sync as people suggested.  It acts more like an oven.

    Dear All


    As said above i sent my 27" to MAC with regards to the gray stains on my monitor, i was told this was a geographical problem strictly in South Africa and that other countries didn't have this. But thanks to this thread i was able to say bull, and i had proof that other countries were having the same problem. I then further said i would not pay to fix a problem i was obviously not the cause. No i wait for feedback.


    I will keep you all posted.

    Yeah I'm not confident with popping the screen off. I haven't had any further issues fingers crossed but it is the marks 'behind' the screen that are annoying.

    HI All,


    Just an update, MAC just called me to say my 27" is ready for collection. They replaced my LCD at no cost and my machine is out of warranty. So by going there ready with printed copies of the thread really helped me.


    Hope everyone gets their machine sorted.

    I noticed too grey smudge marks yesterday on my monitor (2011 iMac 27"). Initially, I thought that these are just fingerprints but shortly found out what the problem really was (thanks to this forum). My system is just 4-months old and I'm really disappointed with this. Most disturbing is Apple's attitude towards customers and attributing this issue to some "environmental problem". Fortunately, my iMac is still on the warranty but since this appears to be a recurring issue (due to design defect) - I'm affraid that I will have the same problem in the future after my warranty runs out. I'm wondering if anyone on this forum that experienced smudge marks issue tried to ask for a full refund? I find it inexcusable to tell customers that this can be fixed only once. We all pay huge premium for Apple's hardware and expect the best quality.
