I'm glad I didn't know that Apple "requires" uninstalling FCP7 in order to use FCP10. (Strange that the installer didn't mention it.) I've been enjoying learning FCP10 while using FCP7 for "real" work, but I'm afraid I'm not going to set up a new OS on a new drive or partition just to betatest.

And until FCP10 is professional-ready, I'm not going to uninstall FCP7. I'll be specific: a professional FCP upgrade will be 1. stable and short on bugs, 2. feature-rich, on-par with previous versions or at least close, and 3. able to open or at very least import previous version projects. And no, the half-assed XML export/convert-with-third-party-utility/import workaround doesn't count—if Apple wants me to use CatDV instead of building their own conversion import module, then they should buy it and roll it into the app.

Luckily, other than this AppStore bug, I've had no problems with both versions installed and am enjoying playing with the two-thirds-finished FCP10.

I had no troubles here in Perth Western Australia downloading FCP 10.01

Apple does NOT require you to uninstall FCP7 in order to run FCP10. I have FCP7 installed on my computer that also has FCP10.  They both work perfectly well together on the same machine.

What people are saying is that in order for the App Store to recognize the update for FCP10 on some machines that also have FCP7 installed you have to trash FCP10 (NOT FCP7!!!) then you can download the updated FCP10.  YOU DO NOT TOUCH FCP7!

I have all kinds of additional effects installed on my machine and I trashed FCP10 and was able to then download the updated FCP10 and all of my extra effects still work, so it truly does not appear to cause any issues in trashing the program.  That might be what the APP Store does when it installs an update anyway, though I am not 100% sure of this.

I wouldn't be surprised. Apple state clearly that FCS and FCP X should not run on the same Partition on your system (note, partition, not folder). Andy

I believe that's no longer the case with 10.0.1.

Ok, I trashed my FCPX application from applications.

Went to 'purchased' in the App Store and clicked 'install'

FCPX 10.0.1 was downloaded and installed.

Projects and Events were all upgraded on startup.

I also have FCP7 installed on same partition, and I am using Snow Leopard.

So far so good! Thanks for all the advice on this.

Maybe the Apple website is out of date?

    That support thread also states;

Install Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 on the same disk as Final Cut Studio (2009)

If you are unable to install on a separate partition, this is an alternate method.

From the Apple () menu, choose Software Update. Install the following updates if they appear in the list:

Mac OS X v10.6.8 or later

    ProKit Update Version 7.0

The latest versions of the Final Cut Studio (2009) applications

Purchase Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 from the Mac App Store. The app you purchase will begin downloading automatically, and the app icon will be added to your Dock with a progress bar below the app icon. Once the app is done installing, the progress bar below the app icon will go away.

When you install Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, or Compressor 4 on the same startup disk as Final Cut Studio (2009), the Final Cut Studio (2009) applications are moved to a new location (/Applications/Final Cut Studio).

    Just FYI.

I did not say Apple require you to uninstall FCP 7 from your computer - they STRONGLY recommend you run it from a different partition.

I quote from the Apple Support Website (today - 23rd Sept 2011).

"It is strongly recommended that you install Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 on a startup disk that does not have Final Cut Studio (2009) already installed. Use Apple's preferred installation procedure when upgrading one version of Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Studio to the next. This procedure is not unique to Final Cut Pro X."

Steviemac63 i'm trying your way, but in the app store install is not showing up after I put my final cut x in the trash. 299.99 is showing up. Weird.

Have you checked by clicking on both the 'Purchased' and 'Updates' tabs? I think i had to click on 'Install' from the Purchased tab.

I'm having the same problem going from Final Cut 10.0 to 10.3, no 'update' is available and it offered to allow me to 'purchase' it. Trashed FCP X App into bin and then it installed fine from the 'Purchased' tab. So thanks to this rubbish update process I'd missed 10.1 and 10.2 when they came out.

I do also have FCP 7 on the same machine and same partition.
