Q: New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well.  In fact I have read an interesting article

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/thunderbolt_macbook_pro_suffers_flickerin g_display_issues/

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

Charles

I mean, Mac mini (mid 2011 2.5GHz model) is not working properly even with 27" Thunderbolt display. The screen flickers upon connecting Thunderbolt cable to Mac mini.

There are thunderbolt display firmware updates as well as firmware updates for the Mini, make sure you've applied both.

I tried all of these! Even I brought both Mac mini and Thuderbolt (yes, it's heavy!) to local Apple Store. They even tested couple of Mac mini's with demo Thunderbolt display units...same result!

Well, then you should probably start a separate thread about it. This one is for the 24" ACD.

It certainly seems like the firmware posted earlier fixed my flicker - restarted and unplugged the display for 15 seconds as it instructed, haven't seen a flicker since. Super happy.

Apple Quietly Releases Fix for Flickering on 24-Inch LED Cinema Display over Thunderbolt

Wednesday September 28, 2011 9:14 pm PDT by Eric Slivka

Ever since Apple released its first Thunderbolt-equipped machines earlier this year, reports have been surfacing from a number of users complaining about flickering issues on company's 24-inch LED Apple Cinema Display when used with the new Thunderbolt-equipped machines.

Apple has apparently quietly released a firmware fix for the issue, although the update has not been publicly announced and its existence appears to have only been revealed to a small number of customers who have escalated their issues through Apple's support systems.

A link (.dmg download) to the firmware update was posted to Apple's discussion forums earlier today, and a number of users who have applied the update have reported at least initial success with addressing the flickering issues. Users report having to reboot their systems and power cycle their displays in order for the displays to function properly after applying the update.

From the description included in the download file:

The 24-inch LED Cinema Display Firmware Update addresses an issue that may cause intermittent display flickering. This firmware will only install on the Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display when it is connected to a Thunderbolt-enabled Mac.

    IMPORTANT:

This firmware update may not resolve the flickering issue if a Mini DisplayPort extender cable is used.

    NOTE:

Some USB and FireWire devices may prevent firmware updates from installing correctly; disconnect non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard and mouse to apply the update.

Full instructions for installing the firmware update are also included in the documentation.

It is unclear why Apple has yet to publicly issue the firmware update for all 24-inch Apple Cinema Display users, and thus users should exercise caution in deciding whether to apply the update and prefer to check with Apple support regarding their specific issues.

Apple introduced the 24-inch LED Cinema Display in October 2008 and officially discontinued the model in July 2010 when Apple consolidated its display offerings with the 27-inch LED Cinema Display as its sole offering. Apple did, however, continue to sell off its remaining stock of 24-inch displays for a number of weeks after the official discontinuation.

I've just downloaded the update, but I cannot install it. I got the alert that my machine doesn't need that update. Which is very very strange. Of course I still have the problem with flickering my ACD24. I have Lion 10.7.1.

Does anybody know something or have the same alert message? Maybe there is a way to force the instalation process

    I quote myself...

Unless there is an official Apple update page be very weary about updating firmware. A little bird told me that these firmware updates are specific to particular series of monitors.

    This isn't an official update.

You are trying to say that my monitor is not in those series? Very weird. Is anybody else in my elite club?

I figured out where the problem was. I have MBP 2011 and I was trying to install this update in double-screen mode (ACD + laptop display). In that mode system didn't recognize my ACD correctly. When I closed the lid system went to the one display mode with only ACD. Then everything went smoothly and ACD firmware was correctly updated. Till now no blinking... So far so good.

I still can download the dmg file from the link above. But if you like I can send it to you via email. It has only a few kilobytes.
