Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

What is curious, though, is that the update was posted almost exactly a month ago. Was it included in any update from Software Update? Can anyone confirm that this is the fix?

Nope. It's not. It's for 10.6.x NOT 10.7. Bummer. I downloaded it and it won't install (thankfully). Yeah this is not going to solve the problem guys... we just have to continue waiting. I did turn off Automatic Graphics Switching and I've had no freezes since then. At least there's that workaround. Let's hope they get this sorted out in a future firmware update. But it isn't this one. Thanks for posting anyway. No worries... it was worth a try.

    Peace-

Another workaround is to allow automatic login, which doesn't sacrifice AGS but might not suit everybody's purposes. That's what I'm doing.

There is still no fix for this freezing problem. I switched back to snow leopard ... can't except this kind of service from apple.

pretty poor service for a pretty expensive toy...

That update was more than a year ago.

    Guys,

I notice that on the front of the support page for MBPro, Apple (i think) have posted something about this with a download..... MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9   Has anyone see this or tried it.

As I've said before I'm not very good when it comes to all this stuff and so haven't yet and in any case my machine is now at the store on a shelf somewhere being investigated for a hardware issue which we know is not likely to be the case !!

I am having this problem since Lion and i was calling to Apple support but the problem was not solved then. I found this kind of solution of turning off the automatic graphic card change, but i bounght a laptop to use as a laptop and now my battery drains for this problem. When will we get a solution for this issue?

Mac back from Apple Store and Firmware Update........ FIXED ???? Maybe

    Hi all,

Well I got a call from my store last night asking me to come and collect my MBPro.  It seems that the guys at the store did read some of this forum and briefed themselves on the problem.

They have replaced the logic board as a matter of precaution in my Mac ???  but acknowledged that the issue was not solved by replacing hardware. The guy stated that it looks like we'll need to wait for a software update to resolve this issue.

However..... On firing up my machine and running the Software Update... The thing tells me that there is a download waiting for me and its a firmware update aimed at solving this problem. I'm guessing you may have seen this for yourself ?

So whilst in the store, I pump it down and install it and so far (and I don't want to speak too soon here) everything is working just fine. I have my AGS ticked and so far no freezes at login. I'm still using a password etc.

Has anyone else done this ?

The only other thing they said was that my machine seemed to take too long to boot. (Currently about 25 seconds). Now I have nothing to compare this to. They said I might want to clear my MBP by re partitioning the drive and reinstalling the OS and then updating it back to Lion. - What do you think ?

    Anyway i hope this helps.

    Regards

No updates, here. Still the same problem. The things go better with automatic graphic card switch disabled and "quick login" at boot (I have WDE with File Vault 2). I noticed that the use of gfxcardstatus to handle the video cards leads to Kernel Panics.

    Still waiting for a fix.

I think 10.7 Lion is just a wasting money why do we have to deal with these issues ? Just go back to 10.6 Snow Leopard and problem solved :) I did this and no more pain in the you know what ,good bye Lion and welcome Snow Leopard

    @ Dave:

Just checked no update avaliable for my MBP.

I'd guess your problem will be back after a few restarts.

At least that was the same for me after clearing the different RAMs ...

I hope not, but if our problem shows up again would you please give a a note?

    thx and good luck

I think they're trying to keep you busy... While you're formatting, partitioning and installing, you're not bugging them, so they can try to find out what's happening (at least I hope so) Otherwise I can't understand why well prepared technicians are trying to solve a software problem making changes in the hardware (THEIR HARDWARE, by the way)

So, let's wait, we have no other option so far...

Just to point out the graphic switching workaround does not always work...

By switching AGS off, and using automatic login i can run for many days on end without freezing. Then just when i think all is good, usually waking from sleep, and Sophos antivirus updating...i get a total system freeze. Perhaps the graphics cards switch around upon waking up from sleep, causing the OS freeze? Need to do a hard re-start. Hope i am not damaging anything!

    All MBP mid-2010 owners-

When did you purchase your MBP? I'm wondering if this be due to a revision issue that was masked by Snow Leopard, but is exposed in Lion. This would explain how it slipped through Apple's (usually stringent) QA process for Lion, as well as explain why some mid-2010 MBP users are operating fine. There is another thread on this issue somewhere on these boards that mentions multiple revisions of the NVIDIA 330M and a possible hardware bug that was corrected in later versions.

I purchased mine at launch. That would definitely make me a candidate for such a issue. When did you purchase yours?

    Hi everyone

I am really tired of all those discussions and advices coming form everyone. We are trying our best to solve the problem, but they (Apple) don't care about us. They either know it exactly about it or they just ignore us because we are few having those kind of problem. Called them 4 times... all the time they told me "It is the first time I hear about this problem", went to authorized partner.. same "We never heard about such a problem".

Well, I bought this product because I depend on reliable products and operating system. But what I experienced right now is more than disappointing. Not about the product... no about the company and their service!!
