Q: Thunderbolt Display turns off randomly

I have a new Mac Mini 2011 i7 Quad CPU version.  I have a Thunderbolt 27 inch display.  I have found that the display randomly turns off and won't turn on when I use the keyboard or mouse.  This occurs when I am doing stuff on the machine, it is not a display sleep issue.  The first couple of times I had to use Remote Desktop to reboot the Mac Mini to fix the issue.  The last time it happened I removed the Thunderbolt plug from the Mac Mini and reinstalled it and this fixed the issue.  I have the latest software updates on the Mac Mini and the Thunderbolt Firmware update on the Display.

I am running Lion 10.7.1

Same here, the display worked for 5 minutes, then turnded black, got back for some 15 seconds and turned black again... Cable Pull DOES NOT restart the monitor. I can see the power plug is charging my macbook, but on the router my display ethernet port is not lit, same for USB connections to the display - they are not powered by the display!

The same thing has happened to me multiple times since I downloaded the firmware update.  Today the monitor AND my macbook pro shut down because of this.

I am having this issue as well.  Just received the thing.  It turns off about 2 times an hour.  The Apple web site does not even recognize the serial number.

I have brand new Mini Server and 27" Thunderbolt Display and mine will go to sleep and then not wake up again, I can do a desktop share and see the mouse and keyboard working but the display remains blacked out.  Reported it to apple, no solution yet.....

Well, as for me again, that doesn't happen anymore after firmware upgrade.

Using Mac Mini Server 2011 with Thun-di, dual monitor with Dell 2311H,...

Still wait for firm fix-up patch.

    Same problem here.

Got 2 new Thunderbolt displays on Monday.  Screen just goes Black.  Requires a reboot to come back (computer may be still on, hard to tell as there is no reaction from screen)

This is AFTER I installed the Thunderbolt firmware upgrade.

Very frustrating as I just switched from a Windows PC and my first Mac experience is not a good one!

If I hit the volume up / volume down buttons, I can hear them fine.....but I am using external speakers, not the TB speakers........I also unplugged/replugged display, and it comes right back up without a restart.

Thanks - not so easy for me to unplug/plug back in as I've mounted the mini beneath my desk.  Appreciate the tip tho... hopefully this will be fixed at some point.  Not sure if apple would take my mini/display back and give me an iMac....

Well I'd hold off for a little while......I bet they fix this through software/firmware soon.....or I'll be sending mine back!

Me too, also a brand new mini server 2011. is there a process on MacOSX-Server to be fixed. Ive no idea. the cable method works. When the display black outed, I CAN login to MacOSX by using www.logmein.com on Wi-Fi network. So, the Lion server still works.

Not sure if this is related - I find the blacking of the screen happens when using a USB port on the back of the Thunderbolt display.

Maybe this is relevant to any Apple engineer reading this.

I got the same problem on a new Macbook Air 13.  First I thought was MBA hung up on me because MBA screen also went dark at the same time. Unplug Thunderbolt cable would bring MBA screen back, then plug back the Thunderbolt cable back to MBA would caue the display to work again.  However, this "working" condition will only last a few hours, different every time.  Then problem re-occur and I repeat the same procedure again.

I called Apple Support and was told to bring it to store to gete a replacement.  It is a big hassle to drag this monster around downtown Palo Alto.

Its a great display when it's working.  Too bad quality is not there.

Called Apple.  Was escalated to a nice senior tech called Gavin who told me that I should return the display to Apple as it is a known issue to which they currently do not have a solution.

Hopefully when my new display arrives in a couple weeks I'll have better luck....

Also having random shutoffs of display - will turn back on if unplugged/replugged. Using mini server 2011 with lion server. Is the post by WestVanPete confirmed? - Displays should be returned?
