Q: Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's

When I insert a DVD or CD, after about 10 secs it spits it right back out. If I continue to insert the DVD or CD right after it ejects, the computer will finally accept it on about the 6th time and everything works fine. Is this a drive issue or software? any ideas?

Thanks

Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

"super drives" not so super !!

after seeing this forum and not one single reply from apple i have made up my mind im done with apple!! my so called "super drive" dosent work either and i must say i have seen and dealt with bad service before on hardware and software that should never have been released but most of companys at least have the balls to go on there forum and tell ppl that they dont want to help them insted of just looking away and keep useing the slogan "it just work" and i must say i have learned the hard way that it do not!

im going to link this part of the forum to both my websites and i hope more have done and will do the same...

finaly if you are thinking about buying apple hardware then dont it will only give you trouble!! and its way ower priced with no chance of upgrading internal hardware and they are not even powerfull to begin with except if you pay around 5000 € for a mac pro and it would probaly still break down as fast as all the other machines they make im post number 240 with allmost 100,000 views and i bet over 90% of all viewers got the same problem with super drives

The slot loading DVD drive is totally not working no matter what I do to it. You can reset the SMC, insert disc cleaners, the lot. No matter what you do, it will simply not read aby disc inserted into it and spit it out a few seconds later. This is just ridiculous and not something that I would have expected from Apple.

    WOW..

Talk about a resurrected thread , I recall a few years back when my DVD drive did the same thing. when I noticed problems I thought maybe it just needed cleaning cause it was so hit and miss , I had learned this was not the case and failing drives was common for the IMac. two common problems I had found with mine.

A failed DVD drive and dust actually inside the LCD and not just behind the glass panel. I called AppleCare

and spoke with them over these two issue. I spoke to a supervisor who admitted these two problems are common, he also said that if he wanted to he could have my IMac fixed if he wanted to but would not because my IMac was a couple of months out of warranty...

I since then ordered an external drive and, in a couple of weeks I'll finally be diving into my IMac to clean the inside of my LCD and replace the DVD drive.

Alright, near the end of the post someone mentioned the drive being hung by a Windows session. I happen to have Parallels installed and use it infrequently. The problem I have is my 20" Intel Mac won't read any CDs other than Apple systems disks, but will bur CDs and DVDs just fine. I went into Parallels and the drive was still captured, so I released it, shut down Windows, went back to the Mac and still no go. Next, I tried inserting the same DVD and opening it with Windows and guess what? IT WORKS FINE! I also had an lder Firewire DVD burner and tried the same with it, same ting happens, it works fine with WIndows and bombs with the native Mac. FYI, I have an Intel Core 2 duo, OSX 10.6.8.

It used to read DVD's but can't peg when it quit.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE DRIVE

I tried cleaning the DVD lens using the credit card method and it seems like it worked.   I can now read both CD's and DVD's.

I have the same problem with my iMac. The CD/DVD will go into the drive 'OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A' makes a horrible noise that sounds as if the disc is trying to be read for about 10 secs. The drive then spits the disc out sometimes others it wont. This thread has been going on for some time and I have read on other forums about the same problem. I converted from Windows to Apple two years ago and spent a lot of money on Apple products. It appears I will have to spend alot of money getting it fixed. This is the second problem where it seems like an Apple problem NOT a User problem. Would I buy an Apple again? Would I recommend Apple? Is it just a bad Apple? Will Apple help? Not since 2008 with this problem.

Problem solved, my bad for blaming Apple. Turns our I installed a Lexar secure USB drive furnished by work for use in my PC. I thought it would be handy to transfer files between machines. Scouring the web, it tutrns out Lexar's security software disabled use of the Mac use of the drive. Deleted software and problem solved.

Started experiencing the same problem and became seriously frustrated until I remembered advice from one of my computer science instructors:  "Start with the simplest reason the problem may be occurring."

This is a solution for getting the Mac to read the media, not a fix for the design of the iMac cd/dvd drive, which would be nice.

The media has difficulty being properly seated in a vertical drive.  Literally lean the Mac downward (backward) at approximately 120 degrees and insert the media.  Wait until it engages then replace the Mac upright.

This would be terribly irritating if I used the drive on a frequent basis; fortunately I don't.  But the fact that an iMac will not boot from an external drive made me determined to find a solution without having to have the drive replaced (sending in to Apple!!)

    Hope this works for you.

On ITunes, Go to Preferences -> General ->

On the option that says: "When you insert a CD": Select to "Show CD"

    It will mount!
