I bought MacKeeper and use it for one thing only (so far): as one place to check all my applications to see which ones have updates available.

If you're using only Apple applications, then of course the OS X Software Update and AppStore Updates page will take care of that. But if, like me, you're using a lot of 3rd party software not provided by or through Apple, then MacKeepr can be a convenient one-stop place to check what updates are available.

Contary to what somebody else wrote, I find nothing about it that's a sham. (Even if some of its functionality can be accomplished in other ways, without it.)

    Avoid third party maintenance utilities.

Let your Mac do the work for you >  Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks

MacKeeper is junk software that no one needs, marketed and promoted using unconscionable practices, and hard to get rid of if you decide, like most people, that it's worthless.

If you want to use something, use OnyX, which has been around for years, and works well. You can find it at http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php . Normally you'd periodically run it using the tasks under the cleaning and maintenance tabs. Of course, with any disk maintenance software, you should have your hard drive backed up before use.

And stay away from MacKeeper, it's no joy.

Erasing free space will do absolutely nothing for performance.

Cleaning out cache will generally slow down your Mac more unless you have a chache file that was coorupt.

A more likely cause of slow performance is insufficent free space. You should have about 15% in oredr for OS X to run well.

Another thing that can slow your Mac down is having an overly large amount of files and folders in your Desktop folder.

Open Finder and select your system Disk.

Depress command + i to display information on you system disk.

That will tell you how much is free.

In the same manner you can select your Desktop folder and depress command + I to display information on it.

If this really large that can cause slow performance.

Ok so if it's less than 15% I should delete the files that are big? Is that the remedy ?

Yes. If you don't need them any more.

A good tool to find large files and folders is OmniDiskSweeper.

Since you didn't give me any numbers on how much below 15% it was, I'll assume the worst and suggest that it was low enough so that it cause your directory on your system disk to be corrupted. So I suggest you boot from the install DVD for your Mac and repair your system disk.

What I am talking about is not repairing permission but repairing the disk.

A corrupt directory on your system disk can cause slow performance also.

How large is your Desktop folder?

Notice in all of this you are only using the system or utilities that came with it. Not need for other third party software.

    Allan
