Oct 3, 2011 11:52 AM in response to a brodyby rich@PSU,Thanks for the reply. Yes. I replaced the battery and the symptoms are identical. I also removed the hard drive and placed it in a caddy. The hard drive is working fine and I was able to backup the data onto my other machine.
I also noticed that none of the USB ports are getting power, which explains why none of the alternate boot key sequences worked. I looked at the power supply and there is nothing obvious (i.e. leaking cap or scortch marks).

Oct 3, 2011 11:56 AM in response to rich@PSUby a brody,Then it sounds like you've isolated everything except internal power supply damage to the power supply and the RAM. http://www.dttservice.com/ in the U.S. I know has service to repair the power supply. I don't know who does overseas.

Oct 3, 2011 12:09 PM in response to a brodyby rich@PSU,I'm not familiar with power supplies but I find it a little odd that I get the chime and the fans run. I suppose there are several different outputs from the supply and they could individually be bad?

Oct 3, 2011 12:32 PM in response to rich@PSUby a brody,It is possible, or it is possible that a limited amount of voltage is needed to get the fans and the chime to go on.

Oct 12, 2011 11:43 AM in response to rich@PSUby Breakstay,I experienced the same issue too. A friend of mine tried to add some more ram to his g5 ppc and the end result was what you described started happening. So I did a little troubleshooting and I noticed the same thing, the hard drive was fine and all the data is accessible. So I got a brand new hard drive, initialized it and formatted it as Mac OSX journaled and also had a spare drive with some music and other files on it. Installed snow leopard onto the clean hard drive with no issues in bay 2. Bay 1 for some reason wouldn't let me even see the clean hard drive. When I rebooted after the install, the missing operating system screen appeared, which I wasn't expecting. So i booted back into the snow leopard install DVD to see if a repair would do anything. To my surprise the hard drive with snow leopard appeared in the hard drive selection list. If I choose to go into startup disk and select the hard drive with the fresh copy of OSX on there, I can boot into it. But this is the only way I can boot into it.
I have swapped the ram so that isn't the issue, I have tried selecting the disk in bay 2 as the startup disk and this doesn't work either. It can't be the Sata data cables or power leads as both hard drives are readable once booted into OSX. It isn't e PSU as the g5 will boot happily the way I have described above, albeit longwinded.
The only thing left is the logicboard. It's the only thing I can think of I haven't replaced, but if it is, why can I boot into the hard drive through the OSX install DVD and not when holding alt after the chime to choose the boot device?? It simply doesn't appear.
Have you made any progress on your issue?

Oct 12, 2011 11:45 AM in response to rich@PSUby Breakstay,Ah apologies, skim read your original post and missed you aren't able to boot into the install disc. Think my issue is different...
Doh.
Good luck with your issue though.

Aug 10, 2016 1:26 PM in response to rich@PSUby zontar981,What sequence are you referring to here?
Command key plus shift key ?
or Command key plus option key plus the letter "o" ?
where did you find this info?
thanks!
I seem to have the same problem, with the addition of "external error at" some long line, appearing
and scrolling down the page.
I have the hard drive backed up on an external drive.

Aug 10, 2016 4:36 PM in response to zontar981by Klaus1,Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.
In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

My G5 imac ppc running tiger will not boot. I get the chime and then nothing and then the fan kicks on in high gear. The screen color remains dark and no apple symbol. It won't take in a startup CD. I've tried restarting with holding the command key, shift key, command option o f, and a couple others and it does not seem to change. Help!!!
Hi rich@PSU,
I've had a similar problem with my iMac G4 and I got it fixed by removing the internal RAM and then putting new RAM in the place where you would normally upgrade the RAM. I can't promise this well help you, but it's worth trying.
