DVD Player - Supported Disc Not Available

I've tried two store bought DVD's in my new intel imac. Both times the DVD player launches but then does not press play. When I do press play I get this messgae.

"Supported Disc Not Available"

I get similar message if I try via Front Row.

Both these discs work on my 12" powerbook and on my TV top DVD player.

I see someone talked about BBC disc taking 30 minutes to mount. I'll leave it in and check, but in my case it is not stuck, I can eject it. It just wont' play.

I have not tried other movies yet. I'll try some more retail DVD's as well as iDVD ones later on. Just wanted to see what expirence others were having.

At least Apple's software DVD mounts fine.

ok, so based on the BBC post I put DVD in and left it there. Came back an hour later the computer locked upon waking. Restarted and went out to dinner. Came back and now all three of the DVD's work fine in DVD player or front row.

So as it typically seems, not sure what I did but things now seem to be working.

Hey guys,

My friend's new intel iMac had the same issue of not recognizing DVDs.

Run Disk Utility (found under Applications>Utilities)
Select your hard drive on the left and click the "repair permissions" button. That should sort you out.

Feel free to use that little trick whenever your mac is doing weird stuff.

whew...i was so **** close to going to sleep ****** off and calling up Apple tomorrow to let them know how I was going to shove this iMac down their throat....

great post. I burned all my music/data files on dvd-rs today so I can do a easy transfer. Well, my iMac ate each dvd I put in there up. Had to restart and hold click to get each one of them out.

Put in a dvd and it wouldnt play. Another one...wouldnt play. I was heated, until I read this.

AND THIS ONE WAS JUST OUT THE BOX!!!! APPLE NEEDS TO SEND AN UPDATE OUT...QUICKLY. What about people who don't frequent various message boards for help?! I bet they would just pack it back up and return it

Hi Jamie,

I was really happy when I read your solution to the problem.
First I updated all my software and then I ran the Disk Utility as you suggested.
Unfortunately this hasn't solved the problem.
I still have the same glitches when listening to a new musical cd I bought.
When I tried to view "The Return Of The King" which I bought not so long ago I also experienced very annoing glitches and at times the the dvd freezes completely. At one time I also had the message: "Supported disc not available".
This is beyond disappointing, especially after spending some 2000 euros for this otherwise amazing machine.
Should I give up and send my iMac back for repairs and waste money on shipment expenses as well as time?

cheers,
Dylan

There are actually two disk repairs that should be performed on a regular basis with Disk Utility - "Repair Disk Permissions" & "Repair Disk"

Apple article About testing and repairing a disk.

It's also a good idea to browse through these:

About the utilities available on the Mac OS X 10.4 Install DVD

Troubleshooting installation and software updates

I tried the Apple Hardware test from the Mac OS X Install disk 1.
No fault was found.

Out of desperation I checked the surface of my DVD and CD that were giving me a headake. They seemed ok apart from some fingerprints. Nonetheless I polished them well and sure enough that did the trick!

Is it possible that the Superdrive is so sensitive to the surface of the disks it reads? The portable CD player could read my CD fine even before the polishing.

Well, hope my experience can help someone in the future.

Cheers,
Dylan

hi all--

resetting the open firmware is helpful thing to do for this issue. boot the computer holding apple-option-o-f until you see a screen that says "welcome to open firmware" and then release the keys. type in the following commands (without quotation marks) -- "reset-nvram" (hit return) and "reset-all" (hit return). the second command restarts the computer. i would not repair permissions for this issue. i would not repair permissions on a regular basis, and not from the install disk. however, i agree disk repair would be a good thing. I'm experiencing this same problem as well. It's frustrating, since I just purchased my new iMac Intel Coreduo just two days ago!

It seems the computer plays regular data CDs just fine, but when I tried inserting a DVD movie, neither DVD Player nor Front Row would recognize the disc. It just gave me the "supported disc not available" error as mentioned above. Is there any fix for this? I tried holding down apple-option-o-f twice, but this key combo doesn't appear to work on my computer, anyway. Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT Hmm, this was unexpected. While trying to figure out what was wrong, I think I might have stumbled across a solution. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but it did the trick for me. This might have been mentioned before, but I thought I'd share it again just because it worked. All I did was insert a commercial DVD I owned, in this case the fullscreen version of Finding Nemo. Strangely enough, this one read just fine. I then got a message asking what region to set the drive to. Once I set it to the correct region, the drive read all my other DVDs. You might have to do some trial and error before finding a disc that the drive will read, but once you find one that will allow you to set the region, it should fix the problem, at least in some cases. I would suggest using a disc that you've never played before on your current computer or on your previous Mac, since it seems preference files from bookmarked DVDs (i.e. ones you've played before) may cause a conflict in the region setting of your new computer, rendering your discs unreadable.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, I was wondering if you could help me too. I've just received my new macbook and I am having the same problems
I put in a DVD created from a panasonic DVD recorder and I get the supported disc not available message.
I have previously used these same discs in my powerbook with no problems (these are dvdrw discs, the dvd-r ones work fine)
I have tried playing a commerical dvd, repaired disc permissions and restarted and I still get the message
Any suggestions???

Thx
