Q: Podcast server will not play videos

I've created and published a few test podcast videos on Lion server.  When I go to view them through a browser, I see the podcast episodes, click on "play", the grey box pops up and nothing ever happens.  I've tried from a few different computers (including the Lion box itself) and used various browsers (safari, chrome, firefox, ie), but I get the same results regardless.   I also added the lion server's IP to the Windows host file to ensure that there was no issue with name resolution.

Again, I can browse the wiki on Lion server, I can browse the published podcasts, but I can't play any of the videos published within the podcast.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thanks,

Justin

    Justin -

I assume that in Server App that you have the "Podcast feeds are viewable by:  Authenticated Users"  -- Correct?

If you change the viewable by to Anyone, they should play.  This occurs on both of our testbed servers (xserve and a new i7 mac mini).

I have been in contact with Apple Enterprise support and they are aware of this.  They can reproduce the issue but at this time they advise of no resolution.

Sorry I can't help,  you're not the only one in this boat though.

I've run into the same issue when viewable is set to "Authenticated". Just out of curiosity are you able to view the podcasts in Chrome or Firefox ? Even when I set viewable to "Anybody", I can only play the episodes in Safari (5.1). Chrome and Firefox just bring up an empty box. Also, looking at the web logs, the video never gets fetched from the server when in Chrome or Firefox.

This problem happens regardless of the authentication settings and regardless of whether I login as an authenticated user.  I won't require any authentication, so I've left it open.

Did some more digging.  Looked through the page source and found the URL of the video that I'm trying to watch on the podcast server.  Was able to download the video from the URL without issue.  It seems to be the streaming function of the podcast server that's having the issue.

Another detail: In Firefox, I get the "Loading Preview..." message with the spinner going round & round.  In Safari I actually get a play button at the bottom, but it has no effect.  In Chrome I get neither of these, just a grey box with the "X" at the upper left hand side.

What browser are you using?  What encoding is the video?

We have fixed a lot of bugs with video playback which will land in an upcoming update.

I'm using Safari on OS X Lion and Firefox, IE 8 and Chrome on the Windows machine.  All with basically the same results.  Firefox shows the grey box with "Loading..." and the spinning wheel, Chrome shows only the grey box, Safari actually gives me a bar at the bottom with a Play arrow and the word "Loading".  No browsers will play the video.  I've also tried from another PC and Mac with the same results.  4 computers total (the Lion server itself, 2 windows computers and 1 macbook). The problem appears to lie on the server.

Perhaps it is a codec issue.  I can download the podcast videos directly through the url (found from the page source) so I know the video is accessible, however I have no luck when trying to click "Play" and stream the video right there on the podcast page.

Oh, and the encoding is Quicktime.  It's the built-in screen capture from the Podcast Publisher.

I am having similar issues but with some variances.

Running OSX Lion Server.  I have Podcast, wiki, web server turned on.

    Any user can view podcasts.

I published an existing mp4 file with Podcast producer.

Running locally through the web i can view the file.

The only remote browser to work is Safari, IE and Firefox on Windows doesnt work.

I found this work around for 10.6 but the directory structure seems to be different for 10.7:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3747

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a question, what is the server name you guys are using when publishing a podcast? I'm using "localhost" because the lion server doesn't have an entry in DNS.  Thoughts?

Well, apparently there's still no solution.
