What is the model number of the Pioneer plasma TV?
Is the AppleTV connected directly to the Pioneer TV with an HDMI cable, or with an HDMI cable via an HDMI to DVI adapter?

It's a 50" Elite 1150, I believe.
I connected the Apple TV directly to the Pioneer TV with and HDMI cable.

I have a Denon AVR-1804/884. Does there need to be some connection between Apple TV and the receiver? Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless your TV has some kind of output going to the receiver (which isn't really the best way of connecting it anyway), then yes there needs to be a connection between the Apple TV and the receiver.
You have two choices: Either you can pass the HDMI connection through the receiver (ie a cable between the Apple TV and receiver and another between the receiver and the TV, or you can keep the HDMI cable as it is and make an optical connection between the Apple TV and the receiver.
The set up in terms of the Apple TV is relatively simple, but I suggest you look at your receivers manual to ensure it's settings are correct for which ever method you use.

Thank you very much! I purchased on optical audio cable and connected it from the receiver to the Apple TV, set the receiver to the optical setting and bingo!
