I went to update my black Apple TV and it seemed to be downloading just fine. I left the room and when I came back the TV screen had an iTune icon and a USB plug underneath, then it lost the signal. The led on the Apple TV is flashing rapidly.  The remote has no effect. Unplugging the Apple TV and re-plugging it in brings back the iTune icon and USB plug on the screen which soon disappears and the TV says weak or no signal. What do I do now?

I suspect it is bricked, i.e. render useless by the update - the same as mine.

exactly the same here .... I gave it plenty of time to do the update and watched the last few minutes of the cycle so really felt sure it was ok ....   then the fast flashing LED started, with nothing on screen, then the iTunes logo with the USB cable thing showed up .....  deplugged for 1 minute, same same .... did reset using silver control .... same same .....

is there a "hard reset" possible with the apple tv ??

I have no clue about the idea of plugging it directly to the computer -- who would want to plug a messed up anything to their computer and HOPE it might find answers ??   the wifi is all my apple tv has ever known, so a new method seems odd, if not silly / wrong

desperately need answers .... apple tv is a big thing in my house (my kids MUST see their photos every day or two on the tv or they get crazy) ....

so help anyone ....   or wonder of wonders .... APPLE might even respond to this .... ??

it's the cable .... go get it ... check if you have one from a recent phone ....  then do the link to cable and restore process .... disconnect the hdmi first or it does not show up when you link to computer in iTunes ...

lost 2+ hours to this crappy update process .... apple should be ashamed they cannot do it better

Thanks for the info.  Quite frankly I had never noticed the micro usb connection (and the original Apple TV restored from a disk image) so I was clueless how it could be restored.  And I couldn't find anything about restoring an Apple TV 2 online.  Thankfully my Kindle cord had the right connector.  Even though iTunes reported the restore failed it did, in fact, work.

No more upgrading on Day 1 for me.  Full Microsoft rules now apply (Wait at least a week before applying upgrades).  My iPad2 had to be erased and restored, my Apple TV got hosed, and now I'm trying to discover why my nearly new Air (now at 10.7.2) drained a full battery while "sleeping" overnight.

    I need a vacation.
