Q: Install FCP 6 on Lion

Juts bought a new MBP with Lion pre-installed. Can I install FCP 6 (FCS2) onto Lion. Somewhere somebody said I had to first install SL then LIon to make it work??

The installer app for FCS 2 (includes FCP 6) needs Rosetta to work and doesn't come with Lion.  So you'll need to install; Rosetta only from your Leopard or Snow Leopard install disc, then you should be able to install the ProApps.

    Thanks

Thats alot better than having to install and go through all the SL updates. I'm only going to be installing FCP 6 and DVD Studio Pro from the FCS2 installer because I'm going to install the new Motion & Compressor versions.

    Thanks

Out of curiosity, have you actually tried this? I just installed Rosetta and the outcome: PPC app will not open. See my post here:

Since I just wiped my clone and put a fresh copy on it, I will try it within the next couple of days with my FCE 3.5 installer which did not work either (I did get it installed on my fresh install by copying over all the files from my SL partition). I will try it on an empty partition with a fresh install of Lion, add Rosetta, and see if it will accept the FCE installer. I will also retry AW6.

If that actually works, it'd be the best thing since sliced bread.......

After posting a few posts on here and also CC I got conflicting views on whether FCS2 would work on my new MBP running Lion. So I contacted Apple direct and one of their tech reps told me that FCS2 would not work on Lion so I asked whether FCS2 (FCP6.0.6 in particular) would work if I partitioned part of the drive and installed SL. He said you could try it BUT he didn't think the installer would actually get to the end of the installation process. With no real clearcut answer from tech support I decided against partitioning and SL I installed Rosetta from my SL installation disk along with QT7. I only really wanted to install FCP 6 and DVD studio pro from the install disks so I sellected them and proceeded to install them. After I finished installation the FCP icon was there in my Applications folder BUT it had one of the warning icons covering it like when there is something wrong or missing from an Application. I double clicked and tried to launch it and nothing happened. I left the MBP for a while to do something else and thought well if it isn't working or won't install I might aswell delete the apps off my system. Just before I was going to delete I went to the Applications folder and the FCP icon was there so I double clicked and to my amazement it worked! People on Twitter have said it can't work because its a PPC installer (rosetta) that acually helps install it and it can't work but I have a working version of FCP 6.0.6 running on Lion 7.2!

Well, that sounds encouraging! It'll be a couple of days before I can do the clean install and try it again. Thanks for the feedback!

I ran my test this afternoon:

Used a fresh install of Lion 10.7; updated to 10.7.2. Installed Rosetta from the SL install disk (using Optional Installs > Rosetta).  Then I inserted disk 1 for FCE; after entering registration number, etc. install proceeded without a hitch. Chose not to install LiveType or Soundtrack (because this partition was going to get wiped after the test). When finished, I launched FCE and it worked. I did not spend much time there, but the basics I tried worked.

I also - again - tried Appleworks 6 by copying it over. Would not start with an error message re. PPC apps.

My take on this is: if the app is universal/Intel, it'll work even if the installer is PPC as long as you can install Rosetta from the SL install disk. If the app is PPC only (like AW), it won't.
