I am having the same problem since iOS 5 on my iPhone4 and iPad2.
This is really terrible because I use my iPad2 to give presentations in my lecture courses.
I was using Keynote Remote to be able to walk around my classroom and be a more engaging presenter and answer my students questions, but now I am stuck behind my iPad2.
As of right now, I can't use the remote I purchased. Please post a fix Apple!
I paid for it and I would like to use it, like I was every weekday before I upgraded to iOS 5.
This is very important to me since I use my iPad and Keynote to teach at my job.
I hope this is resolved soon or I will be asking for a refund for an app I cannot use anymore.
edit: I am still in a 2 year contract with my carrier on my iPhone 4. Upgrading to an 4S is not possible. It SHOULD work on iPhone4 but does not.
Also: Goto iTunes and click on the REPORT A PROBLEM button on the app page. This will go directly to them.... hopefully.

I've got a fix, even for those who don't have hotspot (like me) who want to get the ipad and iphone talking over bluetooth again.
Earlier I said that when I got my 4s, the problem was solved. It was not. I was just connecting via wifi, but I wanted bluetooth back.
Here is how I got it back without hotspot.
1. Launch keynote on one device and the remote on the other as you normall would.
2. Find another app that bluetooth links ipad and iphone (I used 'pictransfer light'). Install on both devices and launch on both devices. Follow the promt to get a bluetooth sync.
3. Double push the home button both devices to pull up the multi-tasking and open keynote and keynote remote on the relevant devices.
4. In keynote, go to settings; advances; remote. You should now be able to get the remote to link (you may, on the device running the remote, need to hit settings and then 'new keynote link'.
Once I launched pictransfer, the bluetooth logo was blue on both devices the whole time I ran through the other steps. I suspect that that was also the point of using the hotspot service.
Also noteworthy: I am yet to try this 'in the field'. For all I know, this won't keep a connection for as long as one might need. I'll find out on Thursday when I rely on the remote for 90min. On the positive side, I was able to keep the connection even when I double clicked home and closed pictransfer while leaving keynote and keynote remote open...

Alex.G, you'r the man ( or woman, don't know!!). Worked a treat !!!
I used pictransfer to pair then some use keynote on iPad and keynote remote on iPhone as normal.
I think this is a brilliant temporary solution until Apple sort something out, they'd better do !!

Thanks a bunch. It worked for my on my iPod touch as well. Brilliant. You saved my life. I use this every day and this week has been a complete drag ever since I upgraded to iOS5 and lost my Bluetooth connection with this dumb app.
Thanks thanks thanks.

I know why it doesn't work normally: Keynote on iPad turns bluetooth off in IOS5 (don't know why).
but when you turn on personal hotspot on your iPhone (just bluetooth) and pair your iPhone and iPad, it does work normally...
Needs a fix! Apple?

I've been using the fix ever since you posted it and I found it actually works better than before I upgraded to iOS5. Connecting with bluetooth was always kind of iffy, getting the connection to wrok. I'd stand in front of the class for a couple of minutes trying different combinations, turning things on and off before it would finally link. Now I just turn on pictransfer and before Keynote and both devices light up right away. Amazing difference.

This saved my presentation!!!! Apple owes you money for saving their reputation! I just made the switch to apple products and a great community with users like you is part of the reason. Thank you so much. Just as an FYI, PIC Transfer Lite didnt work in using my 3rd gen ipod touch as a remote, rather BT Share Free worked just fine once connected (took some retrys) and stayed connected for the duration of my presntation, about an hour, with distance of at least 30 feet.

Alex, this is great, it works just fine! At first I thought it was just me, but now I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue... Too bad though, that it's just a workaround and that apple didn't solve this in the update to IOS5.0.1...
Until Apple comes with a proper update I'll use the workaround that Alex described... @Alex; Lots of "kudo's" for you! Thanks!
