I just spoke to a phone support person at Apple, and they told me that the updater only works in certain situations. If you have flicker with your 24 inch display and thunderbolt mac, you should just contact AppleCare.
Yes it's even indicated in the notes that came with the update:
IMPORTANT:
This firmware update may not resolve the flickering issue if a Mini DisplayPort extender cable is used.
Maybe Apple don't want to release it until it works in all situations, including with Mini DIsplayPort extender, as some users with Mac Pros are likely to use such an extender if they put the computer unit under the desk.

Sep 30, 2011 12:33 AM in response to DanRybby Ralf Uttenthaler.,Downloaded yesterday the Firmware Update and applied it.

Sep 30, 2011 9:55 AM in response to Ralf Uttenthaler.by Tony500uk,Wow this fix is such a tease for me and I am very angry. As I write, as if to reinforce this, my 24 inch display keeps 'shaking' or momentarily going to black. I have an early 2011 macbook pro and the 24 inch AND YET when I try to install the fix it says that my computer doesn't need it.
Oh I see everything is alright is it? No its not as I have a monitor that I paid a not at all cheap £700 ($1200) for not three years ago that keeps flickering. And I am supposed to lug it to an Apple store where there isn't even one anywhere near the city where I live.
Talk about a tease and a kick in the teeth. I am very very wary of Apple and their serious lack of 'care' and the expectation that the lifetime of a piece of equipment (for hooking up to other equipment) is as fleeting as the blink of an eye.Grrrrrrr

Sep 30, 2011 10:03 AM in response to DanRybby caleixo,I've installed the fw update two days ago and no blackouts since then. 2011 MBP + 24" Led Cinema Display.

Sep 30, 2011 10:03 AM in response to Tony500ukby leesilberkleit,Just a thought but if you go to Applications - utilities do you see near the top of the list "24 inch LED Cinema firmware updaet"...... the first time the dmg is launched it installs this program .... then supposed to autolaunch it. Maybe yours didn't go the first time. Try launching it from utilities if it is there... not the original dmg.....

Sep 30, 2011 11:02 AM in response to leesilberkleitby Tony500uk,Hi Lee, good thought but there is no file installed in utilities. I tried closing the lid (though the trackpad stops working) and then using my wacom tablet, but I get the same message saying "your computer does not need this update"...
...Obviously I beg to differ that I don't at least need 'an' update. I did install an update that was released a few months ago that was supposed to fix flickering. I wonder if this is just a rerelease of that fix?
In any event my excedingly annoying, though at least sporadic, flickering goes on and on and on and on...
Cheers

Sep 30, 2011 11:41 AM in response to Tony500ukby iFrodo,You can try to extract the updater from the .(m)pkg file using Pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/) and try to run it.
Of course you need to have BOTH USB and Mini DisplayPort connectors connected to your Mac to do the update.

Sep 30, 2011 12:29 PM in response to iFrodoby Tony500uk,Aha, I never thought about the USB thing. I completely left it unplugged. So I plugged the USB in et voila the update started. It then started loading the firmware update to the monitor and now hopefully I am without flicker. So far so good (after 10 minutes) I have no flicker. I'll be back on this thread if I do, but hopefully this has worked a treat!
Many thanks for the help and that extra USB step...
Cheers

Sep 30, 2011 3:36 PM in response to DanRybby Hey Ryan,Okay I'm a dummy. I said a few post ago that the 24 inch ACD firmware would not install on my 2011 17 inch Macbook Pro. I tried to install the 24 inch Cinema Firmware update again but this time while my 2011 Macbook Pro is CONNECTED to my 24 ACD and it installed successfully. Duh!!!
I'm not poping the Champaine yet but it has been two days now and so far the flickers and blackout are gone. I'll will keep using my 24 ACD to make sure this is a permanent thing. But so far so good!

Oct 4, 2011 3:14 AM in response to DanRybby iFrodo,I've sent a mail to Tim Cook email address to express my concern on the download being pulled, and I got contacted by an AppleCare representative who gave me the official link to the support page with the official link to the firmware update.
Here is the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4045?viewlocale=en_US
So contrary to what we thought, Apple didn't pull the update at all, it just make it official.
Nevertheless, I suggested to the representative to add an entry on the Downloads section of the support website to make the KB article more visible and easier to find.

Oct 4, 2011 10:29 AM in response to DanRybby th.effing,This weekend I again contacted my case administrator (Apple Senior Advisor) for a note on the update of last week and it being pulled. Today he replied to me with the same link iFrodo was given.
Needless to say I went ahead and installed the firmware update. Will post back in a week at max to give a status update. Hope we all catch a break with this one.

Oct 4, 2011 1:57 PM in response to th.effingby Adam Pearson,I was lucky enough to see the posted link and download it before it was pulled. I installed it, and have now used it for four full days, and can say for sure, the flicker problem is gone. At last.
However, I want to throw my comments behind all that has been said on here about the disgraceful way Apple has handled this. They simply didn't care. This update should have been released months ago, as soon as it transpired that there was a problem. The disdain with which I was treated on my several calls to Applecare has forever changed my perception of Apple as a company. Luckily for them, there's no credible alternative for my business. That is almost a shame, as it seems to be breeding an attitude within Apple that it can treat its customers however the **** it likes.

Oct 13, 2011 12:45 PM in response to th.effingby th.effing,Been over a week now and I'm pleased to say flicker and blackout problems are indeed gone with the firmware update. Thanks to all who posted in this thread for the past several months trying to resolve the issue at hand.
One minor bug I have noticed though: the volume on my ACD somehow doesn't remember its setting from before sleep mode when the laptop is awakened from sleep while in clamshell mode. One tap on a volume control button on my keyboard and then it does remember though. Bit peculiar.
Anyway, thanks again.

Oct 16, 2011 11:58 AM in response to DanRybby williamfromandover,My issue was not with a Thunderbolt mac. It was with an older Mac Pro 2x266 with a mini dvi display adapter. I used my Thunderbolt equipped Mac Book Pro to update the monitor, and am extremely happy to report that at least so far, no flickers on the monitor while connected to the Mac Pro. Thanks to everyone for sticking with this. It is now a pleasure to use my Mac again.
Thanks to Apple for sticking with it, but I wish you would have been a little more upfront with us. "We know there is a problem and it appears to be monitor firmware related. We don't have an answer right now, but will stick with it until we do and let you know. Have patience." would have been a perfectly acceptable answer.
Telling me to "revert the OS to 10.0 and apply one update at a time until it starts to flicker again, then let us know when it breaks down" is not acceptable. Telling me that "nobody else is having a problem, so therefore it must be my hardware" is also not acceptable.
Being honest with us goes a long way in keeping the faithful keeping the faith. Just sayin....
Like the others are saying, Thanks Again!
