Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

    I tried everything too and found ot was the very first password i used on the Iphone when  i first set it up. Yes - very silly that this would be the case. Apple tut tut. I tried pin, sim pin, current itunes password and luckily i remembered th first password i tried. Good luck

    Help, I have the same issue.

    Tried every password I can imagine for the last 4 hours... and nothing.

    I wish someone could give us real solution.

    I have PC and I even tried elcomsoft software but it didn't work for me!

    Just wanted to say my Uncle had this issue with his iphone after he tried to do the 5.0 update, he said he never even set a password on it but to restore the data it is asking for a password. After reading another members post I just told him to try 0000 and it worked!

     

    Restored his contacts / mail / other settings. He just went to go celebrate!

     

    My guess is the 5.0 version messed with the passwords and it may depends on other settings as to what one works for you, in other words I am sure 0000 wont work for everyone. I say that because lots of people are having this issue and some people are saying the password that worked is the same password as there computer, others are saying 1234 worked, others say 1111 worked, and a few other combonations. But 0000 is what worked for his iphone, and he did not have a password set prior, so if you did not set a password try 0000!

    imho this is related to your first ever set Apple ID password or the first device password - I tried some of my standard passwords I am using for low risk accounts and it worked ... which would also explain why 1234 or 0000 is working for a number of people

     

    So - keep trying, I am 100% certain it is a password you set yourself at some point of time!

    That worked on mine too (so far)!! I just took the # out of my password and it has started to restore.

    Are those of you who are having success, using an old password for your current iPhone (like the 4 digit login password??  Or the password for the original iPhone that was with the iTunes account?

    Or is it a password such as an iTunes/Apple or other password?

     

    I've tried every password and 4-digit pin that I can think of ever having...plus all of the generic stuff like 1111 or 1234, etc.

     

    It's rather lame that there isn't a mechanism to recover a lost password (and since I can see the the "encrypt iPhone backup" option isn't selected...it's pretty frustrating that my backup is encrypted).

     

    Does anyone know if there is a tool or method that the genius bar has for recovering this password?

    Just a hard a long conversation with applecare about this problem and they can't help at all.

     

    But..... whilst thinking about why and what this process is doing, I remembered that when I orginally backed up my phone I added a password to the backup ..... this is the password that is needed.  so the 1234 or 0000 or even your login password is not good unless its the original password you assigned to the backup.

     

    Mine is restoring nicely now. Good Luck remembering that password you added all that time ago.

    After trying every password and PIN I have ever used on my iPad as well as the PC I sync it to, letting elcomsoft brute force run for 12 hours on my 12proc machine, and reading the forums, I'm now thinking that the encrypted backup was enabled when I first sync'd my iPad to my company's exchange server for eMail. The exchange server does push the policy that a PIN must be set before sync will work so I can see where Apple's logic is that if the iPad is supposed to be secure then the backups must also be encrypted. Since elcomsoft tried every four number PIN combination and I know I only used four number PINs, I'm betting that like another poster above, iTunes used my original exchange password for the backup file.

     

    Two problems with this: neither my iPad or iTunes let me know this was happening so I didn't have the opportunity to record the password I was using at the time and the iOS upgrade process should be smart enough to notice that encrypted backup is enabled and ask you for the password BEFORE the upgrade process starts and your device gets wiped.

     

    Since my company requires a very strong password and since the password change policy is set to force me to change my password frequently and since I have had my iPad since April, there is practically no chance that I'll remember the strong password I had that far back. So, I am SOL and I give up. I'll just have to live with losing all my data.

     

    Now I am focused on fixing this moving forward. Right now iTunes is still encrypting my backups and I cannot disable or reset the password since the old password is required for a reset.

     

    Any ideas on how to reset the encrypted password?  At this point totally wiping the device is fine with me :-(.

    Finally after 12 hours, what worked for me was my first iTunes password.

    This worked for me.

    On the phone, do "back" button to the start. Follow the instructions and make sure You login into the "iTune store" with Your AppleID. After that the restore started.

    HI guys,

     

    Apple really screwed it up this time. After hours trying all solutions posted by friends in this forum, I tried Elcomsoft software and it worked. You just have to install the demo version in your pc and open it. When you click on file, the backup of your iphone will appear by defaul. Click on it and you will see that it starts looking for the password. In my case, it was "k" (this is really weird, what a bug that Apple got!), so after introducing k as password, the restauration was done. Some warning: when it finished, there was a message indicating that there had been some error but all the invormation (contacts, books, podcasts, etc.) was back in my phone again. Itunes was saying that wanted to install a new backup copy but I ignored that because I knew I had the good one (thanks God!). Everytime I plug the iphone again it says that I need to continue with the restauration but I ignore it (click cancel). I guess in a few days when I'm certain that everything is back to normal I will click "delete backup" so the message is not prompted again but for the time being I will keep it there, just in case.

     

    I hope this helps you guys. I will make a formal complain to apple asking for a compensation for all the trouble I've gone through these days because of a stupid bug.

    I knew the password for my backup and it was denied over and over and over.  This morning, the same password worked.

     

    I called Apple and they claim that the iTunes server has been overloaded, which is why sometimes a password won't work and why sometimes people are prompted to enter a password they never entered...

    Well I finally got through with the correct password. For some reason it was the original iTunes password I had setup when I first got the iPhone 4 and iTunes 17 months ago. I had changed that password soon after creating it and have since changed it several times. Somehow it popped into my head and after trying hundreds (no I'm not kidding) of passwords, success!

     

    It is important to point out:

     

    1. When I have performed previous upgrades to the iOS I have never been prompted for a password when restoring the data.
    2. I have never checked the box in iTunes to encrypt the iPhone backup.
    3. I still have no idea what made iTunes go back to an ancient password.

     

    Good luck to all if you have to go through this because this has not been a fun few days.

     

    Let me add a suggestion that I have come up with for storing passwords where you can access them from anywhere. Setup a Yahoo or Hotmail account with all fake information (Name, address, b-day, etc.) with a “handle/name/email address” that has nothing to do with you but you can recall. In other words, you are setting up an anonymous email account. In this email account, create an email to the same account and put your passwords in it but do not include the accounts/websites they are for. You could include hints (that only you could recognize/decipher) that would tell you which accounts/websites went with which passwords.

     

    This will just be a list of passwords so at least you have a master list somewhere and not stored on your computer(s)/drive(s). Just an idea I wanted to share.

    Well after beating my head against the wall for hours and hours...I started trying the same things again.

    And the password that worked was a password that would have been set when I added this phone to our corporate Exchange system.  It's also a password that I know very well and tried at least half a dozen times yesterday afternoon.

     

    It worked at about 1AM, so perhaps this backs up the above comment from that the server was overwhelmed...which should not be the case.  If that is true, I hope that as things get less busy, this issue ceases to come up.
