I have the same one built week 12 of 2010 (March) It is a mistake and mine has the BSOD as soon as I go on photobooth when I installed lion. Went back to snow leopard as I had very rarely a BSOD; it may happened over a year a couple of times; with lion it was every 10 minutes

I would say stay tuned to this AppleCare article:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4086

I suspect that the random black screen issue in OSX Lion might be due to a faulty firmware version (although hardware can't be ruled out as well). It seems that Apple will send an update via the internet, as the article tells the users to keep their systems up to date. However, the fix might as well be a repair program from AppleCare to owners of these computers. Apple was well known for the bad GPU issues affecting the 2007 "Santa Rosa" MacBook Pros, owners who suffered from that issue are still elegible (as of October 2011) to have their system logic boards replaced at no charge regardless of their warranty status.

Macbook Pro 15" i7 (4gb stock ram, made in week 13 - March)

I had been experiencing the random black screen freezes at 10.6.8

I have upgraded to 10.7.1, and now 10.7.2.

Problem has persisted throughout all upgrades and OS reinstalls (clean).

Been to "genius bar" 3 times for this issue now, all they have done is run it through their hardware tests, which tell them that everything is fine with the hardware.

I forgot to purchase AppleCare, so even if Apple could confirm that it was a hardware issue, I'd have to pay out of pocket for it since this issue started immediately AFTER the 1 year warranty expired.

If I have Photoshop open (which I use ALL the time for work) it almost consistently causes the issue.

I'm not fully aware of this "photo booth" trigger that I've heard about, but I opened up Photo Booth, scrolled through the effects, and it did not cause the issue.

Good to hear that apple is aware of the problem. Just wanted to put my hand up as a victim of this issue BEFORE Lion as well.

I just phoned up Apple Care Australia:

They now say they are aware of this issue and to check http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4086?viewlocale=en_US for more details.

They say they are looking into this issues.

On a side not Australian Consumer Law entitles a buyer to a repair or replacement to any faulty product within a reasonable period of time. You do not need apple care for this issue.

just contacted an official mac representative

they asked for my Macbook pro serial number

afterwards, they just told me that my warranty is already expired.

its like telling me to keep my mouth shut and face the reality that my macbook pro which I bought for $2600 last year is useless. better off as a paper weight.

i hope this will not be the case in other country.

    but here in the philippines.

a hard fact that macbook pro mid 2010 is a very expensive paper weight.

Can anyone please tell me if replacing the logic board on the affected macbooks solves the issue? I have sent in my Macbook to an authorized Apple reseller here where I live (no apple stores) and I paied for a Logic Board replacement that is coming in the next two weeks without reading this forum post. (My laptop is out of warranty).

Does this mean it wont really fix the problem and I'd be paying 500$ for nothing?

Finally some good news from Apple themselves.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4086.

I was really hoping that 10.7.2 would've fixed it though.

OS Updates can't fix hardware issues. Only firmware for either the machine or the graphics itself might be able to do that. But if there is a mechanical problem or defect components were used in the assembly, then Apple needs to re-call these Books and exchange these components. Just wait and see.

Due to this being a manufacturing problem for the MacBook Pros made April 2010 and February 2011 some customers have had their warrenty expire before the problem has manifested itself.

Apple needs to acknowledge this manufacturing issue and come to some agreement if a logic board replacement is indeed required.

A recall or replacement agreement is the only responsible approach if the software/drivers cannot be fixed in due course.

(If you agree or fall under this catagory I suggest that you 'like' this post so that Apple take some notice)

am afraid you might have wasted 500$ , they repaired the keyboard, twice on my laptop, the display, the logic board and still no solving, they ran major tests, they finally replaced my computer. Sorry

If you installed Lion tell the rep that you have a 90-day phone support warranty and that the issue has manifested only under Lion. That's a way to circumvent their warranty "argument" to not provide you service. I think that Apple needs to change their Apple Care policy for computers over $2000 USD maybe extend the phone support to 6 months and hardware warranty to 15 months.

Anyways just tell them the Lion thing and they will usually back off...

    @Vea1083

    Sure hope that would work.

It is really frustrating to think these kind of things happened with apple.

Imagine, apple once thought to be a very stable system. Now a lot of posts here are saying otherwise.

I understand, users are paying a "premium" when they buy an Apple Computer and deserve and equipment whose quality is second to none.
