Well I have successfully upgraded both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 however the only feature I can not get to work properly is the iMessage. I can you iMessage on my iPhone no problem between other iMessage friends. The problem is being able to do like they advertise and be able to pick up on the iMessage from my iPad.

I did seem to notice that the iPad likes to use email addresses instead of phone numbers is that true?? If so does that mean on my iPhone I need to start an iMessage using email instead of phone number? I also tried sending an iMessage to my friends apple I'd email that has iOS5 and it's says he does not have the ability to use iMessage with that email (in red with ! Next to email and phone number).   To me that seems to silly and not apple like. So I am hoping that I am missing a setting or something to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Caleb

Sounds like a glitch when using your iPad, and things need to be smoothed out.

When you setup iMessage on the iPhone and use to send a text, first time iMessage works out your cell number automatically and is registered and the number can then be used on iPad's. It's possible then that iMessage hasn't registered the cell number (a Glitch?), nevertheless an e-mail should be received from Apple when it's registered.

Back on the iPhone, iMessage will then be the priority over SMS and the send button is blue. If the send button is green then it is a SMS message and SMS will be used if the number is not registered with iMessage.

I only have an ipad2 but have the same problem:

Tried to send a message through iMessages as a test on my iPad 2.

However, after I finished typing the text and wanted to send the message, I noticed that the 'send' button the right is greyed out.

I was sending it to a persons cellphone in my addressbook.

I did check 'Settings-Messages' to see if 'Show subject field' was 'off'. It was by default. I don't think it would have anything to do with the text of the message itself. iMessage I set to 'on'.

Had the same problem also.  Check in the message settings (on the iphone) under receive at and make sure the email address here is the exact same as the email address on the ipad message setting.

I thought you can choose. When going to the 'To:' field, imessage will show you all of your addressbook contacts (email and cellular telephone number) that begin with the name you choose.
I tried to select an email contact and got the pink highlight with the exclamtion point.

I'm having no joy with iMessenger on iPad too.  Using both email addresses or mobile phone numbers I'm getting the red highlight and exclamation mark in the address box. It works fine on my iPhone tho. Anyone got any advice please?

Try to reboot our Ipad. Worked for me. Choose email- adress to imessage Ipads, and phone number to imessage iphones.

I was having the same problem.  Reboot your iPad. Then send a message - and it should sync with your other device. Thanks for help folks!

I re-synced the ipad. Switched it off for about 20 mins. then switched it on again (it didn't work on reboot) and then re-synced it with itunes. It eventually worked. There are also other apps that are not working for me. the only thing to really do is sync and reboot. quite frustrating.
