Oct 14, 2011 8:33 PM in response to anthaeus1964by sharifromcolorado springs,Yea, v10.5 gobbled up 34 gig of my memory, so I un installed everything, including Bonjour, QuickTime, App and Mobile support, and the software updater. Evidently those are "sold" separately and have to be un installed separately.

Oct 14, 2011 8:38 PM in response to anthaeus1964by nathanjudah,The only thing that worked for me was un-installing Covenant Eyes.
I use Avast Anti-virus and have no problems with it.

Oct 15, 2011 9:15 AM in response to japiohelpby jose emilio,It's great, your "netsh winsock reset" worked for me, I have W7 64-bit. In my case this doesn't last forever, some times when I switch on my computer I need to stop Applemobileservice manually and do the same "winsock reset" again. For this I made this tiny BAT:
netsh winsock reset
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
Thank you

Oct 15, 2011 12:29 PM in response to anthaeus1964by jim1969,Should the winsock reset be done before even trying to update? I have XP 32bit but haven't attempted to update because of all the issues I've read of.

Oct 16, 2011 7:22 AM in response to stukerby MooneyMark,Brilliant! Thank you a million times over! Microsoft Fix It worked perfectly on iTunes 10.5 (Windows XP SP3). Went from 100% down to 20% CPU and then synced in a flash and installed ios5. Between you and Japiohelp, who needs Microsft and Apple Support? Using netsh winsock reset or Microsoft Fix It Tools is a lot faster and easier then starting with the uninstall/reinstall routine. Several uninstalls and reinstalls of iTunes had no impact although this procedure had worked in the past. It appears the issue reoccurs whenever iTunes does a version update.

Oct 16, 2011 10:25 AM in response to anthaeus1964by iReviewTheApps4u,I wish I could say the reset worked for me but I tried it, I tried the fixit, & I tried the uninstall/reinstall route with no luck. I'm on a desktop with XP with a Pentium4 & 3gb of RAM. I was able to get itunes 10.5 but once I try to get ios5 it jumps to 100% & 15-30 seconds later the progress bar freezes & I have to abort.
Anyone who comes up with a solution that works for me on the desktop I'll Paypal you $10 as a thank you.
I also have a modern Windows 7 64bit i5 HP laptop that I authorized but I am weary of attempting to sync my iphone4 to it for fear of losing stuff. I only want to attempt that as a last resort.

Oct 16, 2011 11:01 AM in response to i.am.davidby MAP_Dallas,To i.am.david, yes, you will have to uninstall Covenant Eyes. Install iTunes 10.5 and do the iOS 5 upgrade while CE is uninstalled. When the upgrade completes, and you synch a couple of times, you can reinstall CE.
However, once CE is reinstalled, you may not be able to get iTunes 10.5 to work properly. I am still experimenting with it. Ultimately, my opinion is that there will have to be a patch for iTunes 10.5 so that it works properly with network monitoring solutions such as Covenant Eyes and many others which have been mentioned in this post.
For good measure, after you uninstall CE, perform the winsock reset as described in this post.
I hope this works for you!

Oct 16, 2011 11:05 AM in response to iReviewTheApps4uby MAP_Dallas,To iReviewTheApps4u, do you have any type of "monitoring" software installed, such as Covenant Eyes, Net Nanny, or similar? If so, this is probably the issue. It seems iTunes 10.5 has changed the way it works with Winsock, and it conflicts somehow with these monitoring software packages.
The workaround is to either disable (if possible), or completely uninstall your network monitoring software. Reboot as needed, and then perform the winsock reset.
You should then be able to reinstall iTunes 10.5 and do your iOS 5 upgrade. You *might* be able to reinstall your monitoring software after that, but I'm not sure how well future synching will work. Ultimately, I am thinking there will have to be a patch to iTunes 10.5 to make this all work correctly.

Oct 16, 2011 5:46 PM in response to anthaeus1964by lauriesaurus,hi everyone, sorry to jump on the bandwagon a bit late.. have tried the winsock reset and still having problems.
btw- windows 7 32 bit, itunes 10.5, ipod touch 4, iphone 4s. As far as I'm aware my security is just Bullguard, and nothing else.
Have been having a nightmare with itunes since friday. Got my new 4s and wanted to back up my ipod touch so I could restore new phone from the back up, and also update the ipod to iOS 5. The initial problem was that the back up seemed to work but when it got to about 99% (annoying!) it said it did not have enough space for the back up and my C:/ was then jam packed.
Since then I have managed to change the location of the itunes back up (with a little help from someone more computer savvy haha) but now I have all other sorts of problems...firstly, my ipod won't open any third party apps- they close immediately. Sometimes the ipod is not even recognised by itunes. Often it tells me the device has 'timed out'. If it is recognised, it gets stuck verifying. If It manages to finish verifying the device, I start the back up and it gets stuck shortly after the grey bar begins to load.
Also having the same problems with CPU running at 100% due to apple push, itunes and friends. Itunes store will not load either. My computer is seriously hot (it doesn't usually heat up this much), could this be due to the CPU working away so hard?
Anyway I have attempted the winsock reset, and it didn't seem to work because I can't find the option to 'run as administrator' - can anyone help?! I go to accessorise, click command prompt...but I can't see run as admin anywhere. As you can tell I'm not too educated about these things!
Unfortunately I rang apple support on saturday thinking it was a problem with my Ipod which is now out of warranty... they really didn't take much notice of the specifics of my problem and just took me through the basic back up process which I had already told them I knew how to do it and it DIDN'T WORK. They then sent me an email with their webpage about backing up! if they charge me £25 for that I am going to cry!! Surely they are aware of this problem with so many people on here talking about it? peed off to say the least.
If anyone can help me sort out the winsock reset I'd really appreciate it, I need to get my 4s in to action and my ipod needs a new home!
Thanks
