Q: Unable to share files with other Macs after lion Upgrade

I am unable to share files other macs on my home network.

I receive an error message that the server will not allow additional users to log on.

I can connect to windows machines and can use mac screen sharing.

Mac OS X (10.7)

We now have two computers running Lion on a LAN and neither can connect to the other by AFP. Apple File Sharing crashes every time I try on either one.  This problem is quite unrelated to the limitation found by pbDixon.

The problem you're having is in all probability the one I mentioned in the first response in this thread.

There are several issues with sharing.

I have 3 Lion Machines and when they try and share using AFP AppleFileSharing crashes on the machine that is the target of an AFP share from another Lion machine.

This is a separate problem that Lion AFP to older versions of Mac OS X; from AFP sharing with NASs; and SMB sharing with other devices.

I have reported the problem to Apple some time ago and from some follow-up from them I sense that it will be fixed soon.

In the meantime I have no problem turning off AFP and turning on SMB on these machines.

Seems to be fixed by 10.7.1.

I am still having issues, and I have two Snow Leopard macs and two Lion macs.  I've tried everything.  I turned on/off SMB and AFP in every possible combination on all of these computers.  I've deleted all directories out of the file sharing window.  I've renamed my hosts. I've downloaded 10.7.1...nothing is working so far.

Right now, both of my SL computers can connect to my Lion computers no problem (and vice versa,) but the two Lion computers say "connection failed" in the side bar when trying to connect to each other.  Oddly enough, I can still connect as if it is working, even though it says connection failed, but it is intermittently working without any real consistency.

    Any ideas?

I was having the same issue.  Deleted this file on both macs: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist

    Restarted and was fixed.

No more: "This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later."

All this happened after appstore purchaced lion upgrade.

(the file was total garbage characteres when opend in textedit)

    Good Luck!

One of my computers had the keys and one didn't.  So I just deleted the pref file and rebooted.  All is now back to normal.  Thanks!!

spettinger: Great tip. Note that you should only have to increase (from 0 to >0) the maxConnections key for authorized-user file sharing. The maxGuests refers to Guest access. I changed maxConnections from 0 to 5 and was able to connect successfully.

I have found a workaround for some of the problems posted here:

Our server had these values set to 10 - but we were having the same "not allow any additional users" error - so I changed it to 1000. Are there negative implications to setting this to a value greater than 10 (we have over 150 computers connecting via afp, so 10 seems ridiculous; we were running unlimited Leopard server prior to Lion).

Thanks! Did the trick for me too. (Although how in the **** they could overlook this little detail I'm not quite clear, lol.)

Just a quick note that you can also do it via Terminal:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer maxConnections 10

Enter your password when asked and stop and start Appleshare again in the Sharing System Preferences pane.

PS: I upgraded straight from 10.6.8 to 10.7.2, so it's broken in the latest version of the OS (or possibly the installer) still.

I just wanted to add a slight variation to this. I didn't want to worry about the side effects of typing in a number without knowing valid ranges, and I didn't want to lose all my sharing settings by deleting the entire file, so I used free Pref Setter to simply delete only the two lines in question. That worked fine, it fixed the problem.

What I did learn from this is that after I used PrefSetter to delete the lines, when OS X put the lines back in the values were both set to 10. So I guess 10 is supposed to be the default.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use the Terminal, but I'm more of a GUI guy and that's why I used Pref Setter.
