I have imported some photos directly from camera to Aperature others to hard drive then point Aperature to them.  I am short of space.  I want to move photo files from hard drive to external drive.  Will this impact Aperaure? How?

I am very interested in the answer to this. I am moving from Windows/Lightroom to iMac/Aperture and can't decide whether to (1) leave my photos were I put them on the hard drive using Lightroom and just have Aperture reference them, (2) have Aperture put them into an Aperture Library or (3) use an external HD now.

To both posters I strongly recommend a Referenced-Masters workflow with Masters on external drives and the Aperture Library on an internal drive.

That workflow will allow maximum space on the internal drives.

Always back up originals on external drives prior to import into Aperture or any other images management app. Hard drives slow as they fill and can misbehave as they become overfilled. 70% full is a good maximum guidleine, but less full is faster.

To the OP, existing managed-Masters in the Aperture Library can easily be relocated with the "Relocate Masters" command from within Aperture.
