Q: AppleMobileDeviceService.exe floors CPU and won't sync iPhone 4 with iTunes 10.4 and XP

I just updated iTunes to 10.4.1.10.  After the upgrade, the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe runs one of the two cores at 100%, resulting in 50% CPU utilization.

When I connect my iPhone 4 (4.3.5) the sync starts but hangs on the first backup step.  At that point, both the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe and iTunes are flooring the CPU's...  now at 100%.

I've reintalled iTunes without luck.  I've also re-booted the phone, which has solved sync issues in the past, with no luck.

I can see others having issues like this, but I haven't seen a resolution yet.

Thanks!

I have the answer. Simply netsh winsock reset from a command prompt (as Administrator) followed by a reboot.

Neither uninstalling in the order specified or the netsh command has worked for me on Windows Vista.

But installing itunes 10.5 and backing up ipod touch on a Windows XP computer work. So there is a bug with this software on Vista and Windows 7.

Reading up what netsh command does, it just does not make sense that internet connectivity issues would be the problem and hence solved by that command. My internet works fine.

Really frustrating. I was thinking of getting an iPhone 4S, not now. This is absolute junk.

Whilst not everyone will have exactly the same issues, Many people have gone through the uninstall and reinstall route without resolution, and are still searching for the resolution.

The point of the netsh command in this instance is to repair the winsock functionality of windows that may have been corrupted due to removing malware, network devices, or many other reasons.

The issue of store refusing to load and processor at high load is quite consistent with this scenario.

microsoft have a helpful page that you might find of interest and help.

What I can confirm is that I did not run into this on a Windows XP machine. But I do have this problem on a Windows Vista machine.

I have done the uninstall so far 5 times and last time even searched the net to find out how to remove the two remaining files in C:\Program Files\Bonjour so that I could delete the folder, before re-installing. But still have the issue of high CPU usage and inability to do a backup.

For backup issues, I saw a KB from Apple that asked to delete a Lockdown folder in C:\Program Data, which I did and it still did not help.

They even ask for creating a new user account on the Windows machine and doing the backup from there. I did not create a brand new account, but had already 1 other account on the machine and tried with that and it did not work.

    Hi folks

I did originally reply to that thread, so I got all the latest updates about your experience with 10.5. I was on vacation and had to wait until today and face exactly the same terrifying issued I had with 10.4 and before multiple times.

You guys saved my day :-)

"cmd netsh winsock reset" and reboot did fix it on XP SP3 without a reinstall of iTunes.

    Thanks great teamwork......

I posted this in another thread but I think it should go here too:

I'm a consultant and I've had this problem with four Windows 7 64-bit systems that I'd upgraded to iTunes 10.5. No problems with 10.4.x. I tried the uninstall/reinstall and winsock reset. Neither resolved the problem. AppleMobileDeviceService.exe still ate CPU at 30-40% constantly. I also wasn't able to upgrade the devices to iOS 5.0. Since many said winsock reset worked I dug a bit deeper. Using Sysinternals AutoRuns utility. I found several WinSock catalog entries pointing to invalid filepath. I used AutoRuns to remove those bad entries and rebooted. I now have functional iTunes 10.5 and I've upgraded one device to iOS 5.0. Hopefully I've saved someone else a lot of grief.

did ALL the above, and as soon as I re-install Itunes, my computer maxes out to 100% with applemobiledeviceservice taking 50% and APSDeamon.exe getting the other 50%

    so what's next? A droid?

In the "Just-For-What-It's-Worth" department, I did the recommended process(es) - complete uninstall of all Apple apps per the "released" note identified as "correct answer" plus performed the "netsh" command (after the uninstall/reinstall process was completed). Change: iTunes no longer hogs the cpu (I get about 30% to 50% idle process "time" on the cpu). However, "the process" at Windows XP sp3 boot still takes up to 50% CPU usage. The only difference (this has been days after the "tasks" have been executed) is that I can "use" my computer. But I still have to "KILL" the appledevicemanager process in order to get full use of my cpu. Caveat: I have an iPhone 3GS (which is the ONLY reason I have iTunes). I cannot do an upgrade to iOS 5 because iTunes (or some sub-part of iTunes) hangs during the backup portion of any selected task in iTunes. This is the most current release of iTunes, by the way. Not asking for an answer for the backup hang has this is the wrong thread, but I think the appledevicemanager issue is still alive and lingering even after the "official" fix. Apple! Your attention please! You still have an issue to fix! Get on it! I am on the band wagon of believing that Apple programmers do not know how to properly write software for Windows.

    Hi Connectx,

I have downloaded Sysinternals Autoruns and ran it. How did you narrow down on bad Winsock entries ? Was it simply based on bad file paths.

I checked and apart from Bonjour using mdnsNSP.dll, I see several entries for avg family safety software that I have and all pointing to same dll : inetctrl52.dll.

So I haven't found anything that is bad yet.

    I am using Windows Vista.

I had the problem and did the uninstall per directions from Apple, then the netsh, then I ran sfc /scannow from command prompt.  When you run the sfc command you may need your windows dvd on hand.  The command will fix any corrupted windows files.  This fixed the problem.  Hope this is helpful.

A nice by product is that my computer boots a bit faster!

Ran sfc /scannow and got a "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". This was under Vista. So no luck here.

The apple programmer/s who wrote AppleMobileDeviceService.exe should be fired for toasting so many PCs.

Ok, Here is my last ditch effort to help.

First download Revo unistaller pro from cnet or some other reputable site.  Use it to uninstall all the Apple software in the order perscribed.  MAKE SURE YOU USE THE advance scan after EACH uninstall.  This will remove most if not all the Apple programing.REBOOT

Secondly go into the directories and remove any of the files the uninstall directions have listed that are left. REBOOT

Third Run sfc /scannow from command prompt.  REBOOT

Fourthly run netsh winsock reset from command promt.  REBOOT

reinstall iTunes and pray while the install takes place.

This process will take a while so perform the taskes when you have nothing better to do.

Hope this helps.  It worked for me.

Yes, I simply removed the LSP entries that referenced bad paths. In my case they were caused by a RMM tool named Kaseya. Their agent software created them but it appears they were not cleaned up after I disabled that particular feature.
