    Hi Jan,

Today I lost the audio in my intel iMac system which I have used reliably for a couple of years to record audio files. I have an external sound card, monitors..essentially a pro level studio here in Tokyo. Searching for possible problems, I came across the "iTunes Helper(not responding)" message in Activity Monitor. Searching on-line I located your answer, it seemed reliable so I followed it. In Start-up Items, I didn't have iTunes Helper listed. So,

I located the file, dragged it into Start-up Items, restarted and checked my audio. Nothing. So I checked System Sound...it worked. I did a Disc Repair, drank halfadozen cups of coffee and kept at it. Unplugged, replugged, shut down...and now, I'm listening to radio jazz on headphones, and I don't know why because the Activity Monitor still shows the iTunes Helper is not responding(in RED), yet I've got sound again.

I recently got an iPhone 4s, my 1st iPhone, and I guess Helper has something to do with the phone. Some google comments said iTunes Helper could be removed, but do I want to do that? I just checked my wifes' 13" Mac Book Pro and it too has the Helper. I don't know why Helper's not working, or why it wasn't in Start-up, or why it's working now.

I'm pretty much on my own here, and I'd appreciate your advice/ideas. Thanx.

    Hey 1luckycat,

The iTunes helper is only there to start iTunes if you connect a device (iphone, ipad, ipod) as far as I know.

Do you have any virtualisation programs installed? like VMWare Fusion or Parallells?

I have had some problems with external devices connects to a virtual machine instead of OSX.

    Hi Jan,

No virtulisation programs. After I added Helper or rather Help-less to the Start Up, I waited a day then unchecked it. Funny thing with all of this, 1st start in the am shows no Helper. Turning on iTunes shows the Helper, in Red not working. At that point I simply select Helper, quit it, and get on with my day. So here's my concern and thanx for going this far with me...

Because I don't know why Helper isn't working, I wonder Why? and although everything seems OK, will Helper eventually create havoc. Now while you're here I'd like to ask for one more bit of info:

About a week ago I looked into upgrading Snow Leopard to Lion. My wife did this, there were no issues and she's happy enough with it...uses iCloud and more. Checking these forums, I discovered a large number of updaters that were really unhappy. So I don't know if they are a large or small % of users, or just a very vocal bunch. What's your experience?  Thanx again for your time & interest.

    Hello again!

Since we are a kind of off topic here I will move our discussion to another thread on the forum.

Go here please: Should I upgrade to OS X lion?

As far as I know, you can just delete the iTunes helper from Start Up Items.

    Supryaprabha,

Unlike some others, I couldn't get your solution to work. The iTunes Helper did not reappear after clicking Apply after resetting "Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected".  However, JanBP's solution did work.  I'm not sure why I'm different, but  thanks anyway!

Thanks alot JanBP! I applied your instructions and couldn't believe it, it worked 1st try. I'm pretty green, so I usually have to spend some time & a few tries before I can rectify something. Piece of cake today. Kudo's.
