Oct 19, 2011 7:51 PM in response to lucafromnew paltzby BGreg,Have you tried a safe start, by holding the shift key down when you boot? This may take awhile to boot up.
Do you have the original OS X disks that came with the system? If so, find the one that says in small print on the label 'AHT Version x.x', see if you can insert it and boot holding the alt/option key down. If you can, choose the Apple hardware test and when prompted, choose the extended test. If your'e able to run it, does it tell you anything?
If you can insert a DVD and boot, insert your first OS X disk from the gray-faced disks that came with the system or a black-faced retail operating system DVD, and boot holding the C key down. On the menu bar, click utilities, Disk Utility, then do a repair disk and repair permissions. Then try booting again.
