Anyone try simply using the Voce Memos app to test with it?  Also, if you have old memos transfered when you upgraded from an old phone it would help to compare them to newly recorded ones, to see if it is a mic or speaker problem -- although something must be wrong with the mic -- both people I called (full signal, from home) told me I "sounded strange".

Hearing static and echo at my end.

Same here with static on calls.  Apple gave me a new phone, and ATT&T tried a new sim card.  No change.  Waiting for solution or will go back to my 3gs.

Might be tied to the changes in noise cancellation.  Saw an article that said the old chip used to do the noise cancellation was taken out and that now it was done with the A5 chip.  Could have some issues with that implementation that isn't quite worked out.

Have the same issue as well.

Will eventually try and get a replacement, unless Apple can fix it in firmware.

Yeah mine ***** too. I've had barely noticeable static to unbearable static. I'm

On AT&T.  I hope they fix it soon. I didn't give upy 3GS and pay 500 for 4Ss just to be downgraded. This isn't cool at all!

    FIX IT APPLE

Well I didn't put in all those typos in my comment but I guess that's the new post Jobs era Apple. Ugh, I hate it

This is most likely the adaptive antenna system and it's proximity to the speaker of the handset picking up some frequencies.  Try moving an edge based phone (some blackberries for example or the original iPhone) next to an unshielded speaker and you find interference during data transmission.  The iPhone's speaker is way smaller and certainly shielded so this is just random speculation.

However a good way to confirm this is simply place your finger across the top of the phone, this will short the top antenna and have it adapt elsewhere.  I don't have a 4S, but if this does indeed stop the hiss you are hearing, then you can rest assure this is an easy fix for Apple with minor firmware update.  In short, the frequency which is casuing the minor disturbance, be it 3G, Edge, CDMA, Wifi, Bluetooh, will be adjusted so it always traverses through another route and will be made off limits to the top antenna.  It's probably just one frequency which may be causing this so this should have zero impact once it's adjusted.

Apple is listening and observing all forums and as was the case with the proximity, 3G bars, etc. from previous phone release, this will be addressed as part of the first update.  I wouldn't worry too much and enjoy the phone -- it's a master piece of software/hardware. You are carrying the most sophisticated 8MP camera and 1080P video on a phone among all theo ther cool features.

I don't think they test things like this, I could be wrong, but if they tested for this there is NO WAY with Apple's technology in Cupertino that they could have missed this.

My problem is that on November 14 my 30 days is up and after that I'll be given a refurbished/service phone and not a brand new in a sealed white retail box phone like I agreed to when I bought on launch day.

However, that being said it looks like those that have just had their 4S replaced with another 4S are still experiencing the issue.

We are in a bit of a quandry here....

I am experiencing the same static hissing noise that everybody else is describing on this form. I did the finger test you described in your post and it the noise went away and than returned as soon as I removed my finger. I really hope the fix is as easy as you said it should be.. As this is a really annoying bug with an otherwise nice device.

I don't have a 4S yet but I'm glad my hypothesis has been verified. I don't know the details of the phone but given it has a dynamic antenna it's a matter of rerouting the interfering frequency to a different antenna. If you want to do another test, I'm just curious. Try disabling 3G and work off edge. I read this is not possible with ios5, but I see the option on my iPhone 4. If the hiss doesn't occur the. It's the 3G frequency.

I the 3G off option is not available on iPhone 4S then perhaps this is intentional as the edge frequency is known to interfere with speakers and hearing aids and may bE exacerbated with the improved antenna reception of iPhone 4S

Here are the symptoms I see:

-On the 4S when placing a call you hear the abnormal static 'hissing' noise. It's very annoyng when on a call and in a conversation.

    -I END THE CALL

    - But then I still hear the noise, even with the call ended.  Curiously, I put my ear to the back of the phone and its obvious the noise is coming from there also.  Which made me think is that the source of the noise?

I don't believe that option is available on the 4s.

I have read a few other post on different forms also describing hearing the noise coming from the top bk of the phone after the call ws ended.
