Q: Apple TV homesharing keeps dropping out ...

The homesharing on my Apple TV keeps dropping off randomly.
I have a mac with wired ethernet access, and the Apple TV uses my wifi connection.
The setup was OK, and YouTube and NetFlix are fine, but the homesharing will drop off at random times (I see the message "activate homesharing on itunes" under the Computers menu option). My mac is set to never sleep, and itunes is running continuously, so I know that isn't the problem. Wifi signal strength is 80% in the Apple TV menu.
Can anyone help ?

Mac, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Turning off the Home Sharing and back on again did not work for me. Ever since updating iTunes it hasn't worked. I can't connect to each computer from another any more. The first thing I noticed was that Netflix wouldn't even play anything. Just kept giving me an error message. Very irritating.

Same here.  Think it might be a network issue with mac... username with homesharing issue...

I went in to my router settings and changed the Security Mode from WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode to just WPA2 Personal and turned off my Home Sharing and turned it back on. That seemed to fix it for now... We'll see how long it lasts.

It's not the router. Year worked fine. A recently started having problems with access to homesharing.

Same problem here with home sharing. I updated to iTunes 10.5 and the ATV2 to 4.4 and *blam* down went home sharing, before the updates home sharing worked great so I agree it is not a router issue.  The only way to get it working is to turn home sharing off and then back on on the computer.  Once that is done it will work for exactly one show, it will then stop working again.

Just found and I think it's useful for Win7 users with ATV...

I have the exact same problem - my WiFi netowrk is completely Apple products (TC and AE), itunes is running on a 2010 iMac, and there are two aTV2 devices suffering the same problem (lost connections during streaming, only ~20mins to one hour uptime).

All software is up to date.  Proplem has been present for months, but severity appears to have increased recently.

Would love to know if Apple will continue to ignore this problem, or actually solve it.

Same issue here, since the latest updates for iTunes and ATV2 I have been having the same problems with Home Sharing. I have run my setup for years but wired and wifi and this is definately not a network problem.

Happened again today, it just came back m it's own. Feels like the home sharing on the Mac just dies then comes back.

Yip - mine did also.  Here's how rediculous the scenario is:

Two apple TV2's steaming from the same imac.  One is playing a movie in the living room (no issues), the other one is giving the error that home sharing is not turned on on the imac.... How can that be ??  Both should be streaming from the same imac on the same network.

Can anyone shed some light on what is going on ?

Is there a limit to the number of aTV2's that can stream from the same computer ? (I was assuming that this would be purely based on bandwidth).

All software is at the latest versions (OSX 10.7.2 on imac), aTV2's both run 4.4.3.

How can I access any log files to debug what is going on ??

I have the same exact issue. I think it's absolutely an iTunes issue. I'm running a first gen Apple TV wirelessly on a MacBook Pro with the latest iTunes software. This has been happening ever since I updated iTunes one or two updates ago. Nothing in my setup has changed otherwise and I had a perfectly working system for two years prior to the iTunes update.

Apple needs to get on this.

Yep, I am having the same issue.  Home sharing was the main reason I got thie ATV.  I find even when it is working the network tranfer speed varies massively so movies and even music stop and start erratically.  My wifi network is all good - and I find home sharing on my ipad and my iphone works perfectly.  It is just on the ATV that it *****.  I also get the dropping out issue, and a message saying that I need to connect to a computer with home sharing. ( I just sood up to read the exact message and guess what  - it has suddenly connected)  The dropouts are random - and I am not sure if it is the technology or my frustration - but it seems to be getting more and more frequent and erratic.  I am running latest versions of all software and a 2010 iMac.  Hanging out for a firmware update and hoping it is not just a lemon of a device.

I agree with it being an Apple TV or iTunes issue.  I've had the Apple TV in use for over a year now with no problems whatsoever.  Then just a couple of months ago I kept seeing the message on the ATV saying "I need to connect to a computer with home sharing".  My only solution is to go upstairs and restart iTunes, or turn off and on home sharing.  This is ridiculous, and I hope Apple is going to address it soon.  I will definitely be dropping in the Apple store to discuss this issue.  Maybe I'll first ask them if they have any ATVs for sale.  Then I'll say good to hear you're still selling the product, when do you plan on fixing the bug in home sharing?  I'll post if I find out anything.

If it drops out, there must be a conflict in the setting. I changed my tcpip setting for Apple TV, instead of the default as assigned by the unit, and it never drops since. Worth a try!
