I have been playing with gfxCardStatus and noted a couple of things.  gfxCardStatus supports 3 modes:  integrated, discrete, and dynamic.

I first tried with "integrated" mode and my system was stable (no crashes in >24 hours).  However when running on external large monitor, I have to switch to "discrete" as "integrated" mode won't work with the external monitor.  This mode also seems stable.

So far, the only unstable mode is "dynamic" (the default) which seems to point to an issue when OS X switches graphics systems the system may crash.

    Anybody else observing the same?

That has also been my experience, as I reported weeks ago and several hundred messages ago in this thread. Unfortunately, this thread is now over 1800 message long and new people are trying and experiencing the same things reported long ago. On the other hand, I can completely understand why someone new would not want to read the entire thread -- it would take hours.

I can use my iPad as an external monitor using Air Display from Avatron Software while in Integrated mode. I haven't tried a large external monitor, but it doesn't surprise me that it doesn't work.

Let's all hope for a firmware and/or software update from Apple this week. I am not more than three months with this issue and I would like to go back to the Discrete graphics hardware.

Yep. Mentioned that a couple pages ago, tho the issue isn't just the switching, as the system faults whether graphics switching is enabled or not.

    Hi Tess888,

I recently installed the latest version of Flash and the system froze one time. What I have done recently, after this and considering that the error would be linked to a OpenGL-related process, is to install the Xcode for Lion. Maybe not related, but considering that this set of programs download its own OpenGL libraries, it could perhaps replace something in the system. It is only recently that I did it, but until now has not happened something related to this error.

A greeting and thank you very much again.

It has now been 95 days since Lion was released.  Still no word of fix for us with a mid-2010 macbook pro i7.

I hope everyone on this forum is donating money to this guy who wrote gfxcardstatus for without this app we would all have worthless computers. ( I don't know him, but found his paypal link here -  http://codykrieger.com/ ).

yeah, *** apple? it's been more then 3 months!! I can't work like this!! This crosses the line! I may like apple products but nor I or anyone else in this thread is an idiot, you're losing customers! customers willing to pay a lot of money for a "premium" laptop..

And yes, I think everyone should donate to gfxCardStatus' developer, at least we have a semi operational laptop with gfxCardStatus in integrated mode..

This was exaclty how the faulty behavior started for me as well. At first, I'd get the black screen and my initial impulse was simply to "wait it out", and surely enough, the first half dozen times, it would come right back as if nothing had happened, as it were a simple delay in re-igniting the display after waking from sleep. After about a week of this behavior, it wouldn't come out of it one time, even after waiting 10-15 minutes. It was the first time I'd had to hard-reboot the machine. Now, without gfxCardStatus, I can trigger the BSOD with the PhotoBooth -> Effects -> 2nd page every time.

Note, as someone else mentioned here, when one does a clean install into a fresh HD (or partition), for many people the BSOD problem appears to go away for the first few minutes of playing with the fresh OS and this was certainly the case for me which caused me to assume my machine wasn't as badly at fault as other's in this thread, but upon retesting that same fresh disk (totally vanilla 10.7.2 on 8GB i7 15" MBP) a few weeks later, it now BSOD'd right away with the above recipe.

For those new to this annoyance, and conifident that they've addressed the similar (but I believe unrelated) Flash driver issue, I'd recommend using the PhotoBooth test as a gage to see where they stand. gfxCardStatus in Integrated Mode will keep you running with many fewer BSODs (I haven't had one for a month) if you can tolerate the slight hit in performance until such time as you can get your logic board replaced or Apple releases some form of firware/driver fix and/or recalls the affected defective machines.

Well, up to last year I had been a PC/Windows year for a long time. I love Apple products and really admire the company. I was so sick of waiting for the windows hour glass and circle when booting up a PC. I was also tiring of frequent re-boots to crashes. I just knew that Mac was the way forward. My Macbook Pro is a beautiful machine, but since upgrading to Lion, the above expereinces from the windows days are back to haunt me.

Please Apple, don't let me lose faith in you. Let us know you are working on a resolution soon!

Just to let everyone know - After almost 2 months in service I finally have a speedy and problem-free mid-2010 MBP with Core i7. The solution: logic board replacement.

It actually took a LOT of effort on both sides, Snow Leopard and Lion clean installs, reinstalls, and TWO logic boards until finally it all works.

I have no idea why it helped, but for 2 weeks I am now running Lion (10.7.1 and 10.7.2) without gfxcardutil, with automatic switching enabled, external monitors, projectors and a variety of software without hiccups. No kernel panics, no restarts, just as promised.

After an unsuccessful logic board replacement and subsequent "data capture," I was told by a Senior Customer Support rep that engineering is working on a solution, and that because it's now acknowledged by Apple to "sit tight and wait for the software update."

There may not be a fix yet, Paul, but Apple acknowledges working on it. So that isn't "no word," it's "no answer yet." There is a difference.

So? "no word" or "no answer" makes such a big difference for you? And because it's "no answer," you still think this is reasonable? To me, I feel this is ridiculous. And c'mon, apple has "no word" on this problem for a good 80+ days until thu finally post something saying they are working on a solution. Leaving all of us with this issue puzzled and struggled for this $2000 machine. If you feel it's acceptable cuz after 95 days they acknowledge it, good for you. I guess with this kind of genorous standard, even windows vista is an outstanding OS...;)

    Hi Tess888,

I was wrong, the installation of Xcode had no effect. Today I was working with external monitor and computer doesn't recovered from sleep mode. Console registered a lot of NVDA errors of differents types.

I think I'll wait for an Apple solution. My warranty period has finished on October 17th.

         Greetings and thanks again.

I don't want to turn this thread into an argumentative one, but here is my take FWIW:

I am glad that Apple has acknowledged the problem via their official knowledgebase entry.

What is not acceptable to me, is how some Geniuses (not all, but some) are using this acknowledgement now as an excuse to tell the customer to "wait for the fix". This bug causes random shutdowns (we can get it to replicate reliably with Photobooth but otherwise our MBPs could shut down at any time) which results in data loss and a generally unusable computer.

Before the acknowledgement Apple was replacing logic boards in a good-faith effort to provide its customers (many of whom paid over $2000 in the last 18 months, as well as over $200 in AppleCare) with a working computer. Now with the acknowledgement, it's somehow accepted that you can tell someone who outlaid that kind of cash to just sit tight and keep using a computer that could shut down at any time and result in lost data and productivity?

To me the answer is no. It's good they acknowledged it. But until they figure out what's wrong, they need to continue providing good-faith service to restore peoples' machines to good working order.
