Q: AppleMobileDeviceService.exe floors CPU and won't sync iPhone 4 with iTunes 10.4 and XP

I just updated iTunes to 10.4.1.10.  After the upgrade, the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe runs one of the two cores at 100%, resulting in 50% CPU utilization.

 

When I connect my iPhone 4 (4.3.5) the sync starts but hangs on the first backup step.  At that point, both the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe and iTunes are flooring the CPU's...  now at 100%.

 

I've reintalled iTunes without luck.  I've also re-booted the phone, which has solved sync issues in the past, with no luck.

 

I can see others having issues like this, but I haven't seen a resolution yet.

    sorted it and can now backup update iphone etc. (Uninstall/reinstall did not work after several times)

    This is terrible!

    When I upgraded to 10.4 the unistall/reinstall sequence worked for me. I had to upgrade to 10.5 for the new 4S and the unistall did NOT work.

    And this is a work laptop that I don't have administrator rights to, so I can't run the winsock fix either! I'm stuck!

    I can't understand how Apple hasn't fixed this in the months since it came out!

    Not happy right now!

    I tried 15 different fixes including uninstall, reinstall, etc.

     

    Below is what finally worked for me...... it is very simple, so definitly worth the try:

     

    Start --> Programs --> Accessories (Right Click on Command Prompt) --> Run as Administrator

     

    then type in:

     

    Netsh winsock reset

     

    Hit enter, restart PC, open iTunes, go to Store

    I had same problem and spent no less that 20 hours in front of my XP computer trying to fix this and several with Apple support on the phone.  I came across this thread and figured, "What the ****!"  I did the Netsh winsock reset and Lo and Behold!  It worked...Thanks David, OUTSTANDING!

    Same problem since last August.  Two visits to the genius bar at apple stores, unloaded itunes according to detailed directions, restored iphone 3gs, and none of that worked.  Finally third visit to apple store, I was told by the genius that he didn't know anything about pc's running xp but he gave me the Netsh winsock reset solution.  Voila!! everything now working fine including install of the new iphone software.  So the correct answer is run cmd then type.

    You atleast have your device under warranty so you could approach an Apple store. I think this problem needs a call to tech support by someone who still has there device under warranty. Both my iPod Touch 4g AND iphone 4 are outside that period.

     

    None of the solutions mentioned here have worked for me on Vista. I still have APSDaemon.exe and Applemobiledevice.exe consuming 50% each of CPU time. itunes.exe takes what little is left.

    Hi. This really is a reply to all and I hope that all see it. I did all the suggested fixes including removing everything and re-installing and the netsh winsock reset command. They all did something but didn't fix the problem completely. I had the issue of not being able to back-up my iPhone 3GS along with the CPU usage issue. What I've since discovered is that if I un-installed my Internet security software I had (Bsecure - Cloudcare), that all issues were cleared up, including the CPU hogging issue. When the appledevicemanager.exe service was active aftwards, it did take up cpu usage, but only when it was working, i.e. really doing something. When, apparently, its tasks were done, it stopped hogging the CPU. Everything worked, I was able to upgrade my iPhone, do a backup, syncing worked, etc. So may I humbly suggest that perhaps some of you folks, if you have some sort of Internet security suite active, that maybe you look into that as part of the issue? I still think it's an Apple.com problem, because no other application on Windows has issues with my security suite. The problem I anticipate with Apple is the issue of the blame game, where Apple will blame the security software and the security software company blame Apple. I do believe it's already started. FYI.

    Hi Connectex, for the rest of us mere mortals who have the same problem. Is this an apple coding issue? other threads talk of PCtools conflicts and changing AV programs?

     

    What can I do? Win Sock ?? What's that?

     

    Is is possible to downgrade the 10.5 touched libraries. Maybe it'd be easier if I reverted to a previous version?

     

    Suggestions? Ta.

    Sorry Bigdid, your answer needs a caviat. This is fine if you're libraries and programs are still at 10.4.xx.xx. Once they get upgraded to 10.5.xx.xx you're knackered. As it's not possible to use 10.5 libraries with 10.4.xx programs.

     

    Still trying to find out how to fix this....

    you can revert your libraries back to 10.4 - i did it myself.......search on youtube

    AppleMobileDeviceService.exe CPU usage problem on my Windows XP and Windows 7 machines was caused by a conflict with Safe Eyes internet filtering software.  Apple tech support had me run the netsh winsock reset command and reboot, which solved the iTunes problem but broke Safe Eyes.

     

    Contacted Safe Eyes support, and their developers are aware of this conflict and are working on a fix.  Will use Parental Controls built into our Trend Micro internet security suite, at lease until Safe Eyes comes out with a fix.

     

    For us, this problem started with iTues 10.5  - before this all was well.

     

    Perhaps this same thing may be true of other Internet filters...

    I just ran

    command prompt (cmd)

    netsh

    winsock

    reset

    ...then restarted computer.

     

    Applemobiledeviceservice.exe is 0% cpu.  Opening itunes - 0% cpu.  Anyone w/that stupid "Determining Gapless Playback Information" and it hangs or stalls on a file....this solves that problem as well.

     

    I'm using Win7 x64 and iTunes 10.5.0.142 (latest version)

     

    Hope this helps someone else.

    Yep did thebamber stuff also - caveat - has to be run in admin status. Still didn't fix.

    Some posts are concerned that the netsh wisock reset could compromise security!

    ANYONE AT APPLE HAVE A VIEW ON THAT?

     

    Advice on restoring 10.5 libraries to 10.4 on youtube is not really 'that'. It's how to recover a 10.4 backup that you have on your pc from just prior to your 10.5 upgrade.

     

    Guess what? when iTunes updated to 10.5 automatically. It didn't create a backup. So don't waste your time on youtube if this is your situation.

     

    WITH ALMOST 11,000 VIEWS OF THIS TOPIC SOMEONE AT APPLE SHOULD BE WORKING VERY HARD TO PUBLISH A DEFINITIVE SOLUTION. Which might be pull the 10.5 upgrade for the moment. 

     

    Sample solutions guiding us to deinstall and reinstall are simply wasting time.

     

    As my music library was small, I downgraded to 10.4.0.8 creating a clean library (which I've now backed up manually - :-( tsk tsk apple upgrade script writers!!!).

     

    Apps that you have already purchase via your apple id can be downloaded foc again. Set up all my podcasts again. Sync'd calendars and email.

    Now my iphone is synching as I had become acustomed to it working prior to the upgrade.

    Applemobiledeviceservice.exe is hardly noticeable. CPU at 0%-8% with applemobiledeviceservice.exe and itunes open.

     

    NOW THATS IN STARK CONTRAST TO WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH 10.5 - COME ON APPLE SORT THIS OUT. YOUR STUFF WORKS WHEN YOU DO IT PROPERLY. BUT YOU'VE GOOFED ON 10.5!    

     

    Needless to say when/if you do reinstall to 10.4.0.8 www.oldapps.com remember to uncheck the 'enable auto updates to apple programs' option :-)

    The suggested uninstall/re-install does indeed work ... however the same problem recurs after the next time apple decides to hand out a new version of itunes through Software Update.  I just got this problem a second time on upgrading to iTunes 10.5.

     

    Any chances of Apple doing an upgrade that actually solves this problem ?
